My 2023 trip - Israel, South Africa, USA

A day trip is theoretically possible from Amman but not Tel Aviv. There are now only two flights a day in each direction from Tel Aviv to Cairo compared to about nine from Amman, and they only give about a 3-hour layover in Cairo.

The Grand Egyptian Museum has no projected opening date and it always seems to get pushed back. But a four-hour private tour has been available since 2019 for $US250. Given that this is a once-in-a-lifetime destination it might just be worth me so stingily coughing up the gold.

Given that the Qantas flight arrives in JNB at 3.40 in the arvo, when is the earliest I should schedule a domestic flight to CPT? Should I drive to Stellenbosch that evening or is there an acceptable airport hotel in Cape Town?

This place is excellent and well-priced. Approx 7 minute drive from the AP on the free hotel shuttle.

I wouldn't ever book a transit time in JNB under 2.5hrs simply because the time it takes to get your bags can vary a lot there. We flew SYD - JNB 6 months ago and we had over an hour wait for our bags even though we were the only flight waiting at the carousels. If you want to fly to CPT the same day I suggest you don't book a flight departing before 6pm. That would mean you wouldn't get out of the airport there before about 8.30pm so it wouldn't be advisable to then drive to Stellenbosch that night as it will be well and truly dark by then. I think CPT airport only has Hotel Verde. You will have a long travel time from SYD to CPT so an o'nite stay at CPT airport (or elsewhere in CPT) will let you rest up and then you can leave refreshed the next morning

Hi RooFlyer, your link to "Twice around the world in 40 days" has led me to revisit that trip report. Now half way through reading it and enjoying it immensely. Members owe a vote of great gratitude to you, in particular, and regular trip reporters, for such outstanding trip reports.

I've just discovered that a particular cruise leaving Europe for the USA fits right into my schedule and would tick several items off my bucket list. However it would mean that I would only get ~ 16 days in total to spend in South Africa and Israel/Jordan collectively. I'm just wondering is it still doable to see the big highlights or do I need to cut out one leg of my trip?

I plan on departing in mid-June, by the way.

Qantas sells same day connections to CPT. Not codeshare but will be on the same PNR, so you're covered if the connection is missed.
