I set myself my trip to States would be no checked luggage, no waiting at luggage carousel, no worry will bag arrive, what condition, etc., etc.

I used my Samsonite carry on and weighed between 6.8 and 7.4 kilos throughout trip and used my folding luggage carrier for wheels.

Oh what a feeling to breeze past luggage carousel after departure trying not to feel too smug. ;)

I was asked for it to be priority checked for CHS-DFW flight in Amer. Eagle Embraer (50 seater). But it was ticketed with premier luggage as I boarded so I'm not counting this as I didn't have to go through checking in or luggage carousel.

I was away three wks. My hotel bathrooms looked like laundries but that wasn't a concern travelling on my own.

The only time I would consider checked luggage again would be when I lose my excess weight and would be buying new clothes (far off event).

How on earth did you almost need to check luggage for AFF3??

My question too. I can now do up to 5 days away from home without packing a checked bag. It's tough but doable. If you can turn your bathroom into a laundry (or find a laundromat) it's even easier :)

Too much time spent wandering around the shops...
And there's NO WAY I'm washing my clothes in the bathroom! Or any random laundromat. I've found hotel dry cleaning more than adequate.

One can always live like 'Jack Reacher' and just replace one's clothes every few days.

I had to check baggage on the way back from AFF3; well I was flying on a Dash 8-300 after all, and they only allow 4kgs as carry on.

I'm currently on a 4 week trip with carry-on only. I'm constantly traveling and have checked luggage once that I can remember in the last two or three years, and it was lost at Heathrow...!

I find myself getting frustated these days when I get stuck behind someone checking luggage in. The process seems to take so LOOONNNNG.The same for exiting the airport. No need to guard 12.5cm of luggage carousel against other travellers wanting to get in and grab their cases first - just breeze past the lot and go!

Personally I try and go cabin baggage only up to 2 weeks away.

The thing that always seems to stop me going carry-on only is shoes. Why can't I find a pair of shoes that are formal enough for a wedding, casual enough for day-to-day, sturdy enough for hiking, light enough for jogging, comfortable enough for around town and have no metal parts? :p

Rockports will almost do all of them.

As someone who did 6 weeks including a 5 day cruise and then Europe Canada and the USA (there's probably a trip report around somewhere), with only a carry on, its a great way to go. This was in December-January.

I did get sick of the pullover - I ditched it in Montreal and bought a new one. The only time I use a checked bag is on the way home from Vegas after buying this year's clothes in the outlet malls.

The feeling of liberation as you walk straight out of an airport onto the street is palpable. I reckon in my time I have saved days worth of my life not spent hanging around carousels.

Apologies for reviving this old thread, but the subject matter is relevant.

Apologies if already seen it, but it is interesting. I did note no exercise equipment, and I'm sure the lady shown is not the same size as some of us, but shows exactly why it is inefficient to fold rather than roll.

If you can do 5 days you can do 5 weeks! Roll instead of fold; plan carefully and be prepared to wash in the hotel bathroom, with the occasional visit to the local laundry. Easy!

It is v nice to carry light and I do do handwash in the hotel ;) but on a five week trip and multiple destinations, it seems like most of the photos I take appears that I am wearing the same shirt

I'm not sure if this has been posted before. No Baggage Challenge -- Around the World with no luggage

As a chronic overpacker who thinks there is nothing worse than spending hours in a laundromat several times a week instead of enjoying an amazing city I took in his advice and saved a whopping 2kg on my outward bound luggage. I more than made up for it on the trip home.

Cabin bag only? It's stuffed with copies of hotel bookings, flights, rail bookings, maps, reading material, pens, travel documents, cameras, macbook, ipod, travel guides, clean clothes, and just stuff. And I leave room for an amenities kit if it's worth it and the J class menu.

 That's a ridiculous amount of clothes to pack!! And what it doesn't mention is the weight - sure it fits, but I bet it's not under 7kg! And I bet there's not enough toiletries to last 10 days.
