Got intp LAX yesterday after my first flight on VA syd-lax.
I've done it too many times on QF and the virgin experience was different, but the same.

We were a little late leaving as they apparently had some major failure of their systems on Friday and several connecting flights were late, so we left about 20 minutes late, but made it up and arrived on time at LAX

Paid for an upgrade in Y to an exit row and was more than happy with the seat. 40a. There were no cold drafts and I didn't need the blanket for the whole flight. Cabin crew typically virgin - young and having fun.

Food was good for the first meal - chicken and mushrooms and something, or beef stroganoff or a vegetarian dish. Got a free (small) glass of wine, and after that you pay per glass.

Water and snacks (chips and other small things) available through the whole flight once the cabin service is over.

Breakfast was a bloody fritata again (why do QF and VA always think a fritata is the best option for breakfast!!), so I skipped it and had a continental brekky which was wheatbix.

Things good about the 777 are that the toilets are HUGE compared to the 744 and 380. It would be very easy to join the mile high club if one so desired!
Cabin was fairly quiet, seats fairly comfortable, although firm. The FA who sat in the jump seat in front of me was talkative and happy but careful that she always did the right thing when other FA's were around - I think she was new.

The safety video is a scream! I don't know if the animated characters have names, but I am not sure if it conveys the seriousness of what is involved or not. But its certainly a good laugh, especially at the end where the token guy looks back at the camera and says to make sure your hair is ok.

I did get a little tired of the references to the "fantastic" crew and staff, but I guess thats a Virgin thing.

We were not warned to avoid congregating around the toilets like I was on the QF flights I've done in the past, and there was no secondary screening/search/bag search at Sydney prior to departure.

We also had a fair amount of light/moderate turbulence during which the seat belt sign came on and the PA told everyone to sit down and avoid using the loo's. On QF, when this happens, normally the crew stop meals etc and go sit down as well, on VA they kept serving meals. When I had my "glass" of red passed to me, it almost ended up on the floor as we hit a bump.

VA also tell mothers to remove babies from bassinets when the seat belt light comes on.

All in all, it was a good flight and I'd happily fly with them again, although the QF experiences I've had are just maybe a couple of poinst ahead of them.

The fact that I'm typing this at 2am LA time probably means my body clock has some adjusting to do.

Interesting... anyone know if the requirement for that PA has changed and QF just hasn't caught up?

WT

No it hasn't changed for flights operating in US airspace.

Virgin probably forgot on this occasion...

He heh, noticed the same thing on NZ6 AKL-LAX! Unfortunately for MrsDrJ and I the kids were with us, so our induction into the MHC is going to have to wait for another day...
