MYTH BUSTER: There IS a spend limit on the Centurion card!!

For those who think $4300 is not good value, consider this.

A Centurion card holder gets 1.5 points for the first $500K.

This means that each year, they will receive 250,000 free MR points, if they spend $500K.

A SYD-SIN return Business Class Saver ticket on SQ is only worth 90,000 points.
So 250,000 free points represents 2.7 Business class tickets to Singapore.
I checked on the SQ site and a SYD-SIN return J class is worth $4358.00 (excl taxes).
Therefore, 250,000 points at this level is worth $11766.60.

Now that's worth while!

Or at worst case scenario, the same ticket on the Business Class Standard is 180,000 points.
Even at this level, 250,000 points represents $6052.77 worth of SQ fares.

This does not include any other benefits that comes along with the Centurion card, such as free travel insurance etc.

Just my 2c worth.

PS: I can't believe this thread has made it to 10 pages long. Hehe

great example!

but playing devils advocate here,

I dont know much about amex cards,

but how much EXTRA value for the $4300 vs $250 annual fee would you get by spending the $500k?

Indeed. And a return SQ *A redemption on NZ can bag you a J South Pacific return journey for 35,000 points. So thats about 7 return NZ J flights a year with the bonus 250,000 points !!!

EDIT: and the 1.5 points is not including loyalty bonus which I believe goes up to 1.75 points per $.

Not really. A J ticket is v easy to obtain with no issue whilst awards are hard to come by. It would onbly be worth that amount if would both buy a full J ticket and there are awards available

If would not have purchased the full J ticket it is not worth that

That also assumes that the Platinum and Gold and Green all only earn at 1 point per dollar as well as spending 500,000 dollars

Is there a way you can discover your Amex risk rating? If I ask will they simply tell me?

Yes they will. After a discussion on this board - I think it was this thread in fact - in which the issue of AMEX exposure limits was discussed, I called AMEX and asked for mine. The guy did some typing and gave me a number which he said it would be find to spend up to in a single transaction without it raising any flags with them. He added that I could spend more if I wanted to but in order to be guaranteed of having no "issues" it is always best to call them for pre-authorisation

Thanks Homer. Obviously without infringing on your privacy, is it a rating like a number score? Or A+ to F? etc

I was given a dollar amount so, on reflection, I may not actually have answered your question. :)
