NAB Qantas Premium 75k bonus

Annual fee still hadn't been charged as of this morning, so I rang up to cancel - after a 20 minute wait, I ended up talking to a very friendly, local agent and used the changes to the points earn announced by NAB yesterday (see: https://www.ausbt.com.au/nab-next-in-line-to-cut-credit-card-frequent-flyer-points) as my 'reason' for cancelling the card. She asked me whether I had received the bonus points in my QFF account, and when I confirmed that I had, she was surprised I had got them so soon and said that the would be clawed back if I cancelled. Since I am reasonably confident that it is not possible for NAB to deduct points from my QFF account, I was happy to call their bluff and persisted with the cancellation - the final retention offer was a 6 month 0% balance transfer, which I knocked back and the card is now cancelled.

My 75,000 bonus points posted the day after I paid the balance on my first statement (almost exactly two weeks after said statement processed and the regular spending points posted) - the cynic in me thinks the timing right after payment is not a coincidence 

Annual fee still hasn't been charged, so the plan is to pay off the balance tomorrow and cancel the card on Tuesday.

No, I was relying on a number of years of following AFF which suggests that deducting/clawing back points from QFF accounts is rare (the examples I can remember are when Woolworths first stopped offering QFF points and when Optus withdrew from their Qantas partnership).

However, since that you have mentioned it, I dug up the terms and conditions for NAB Qantas Credit Card accounts (https://www.nab.com.au/content/dam/nabrwd/personal/banking/documents/qantas-rewards-tcs.pdf) and I can't see any references to clawing back points.

Have you checked the Terms and Conditions?

I would be thinking you need to check the T&C of the bonus offer specifically rather then the General one.
The one thing that bothers me the most, is how the CSR you spoke to actually used the term clawback, as its not an everyday term.

The terms and conditions of the 75,000 bonus points offer which ended on 31 March no longer seem to be available, and I will admit to not taking screenshots as this thread didn't suggest any problems with NAB crediting the bonus points. And to clarify I can't actually recall the exact word the CSR used, so clawed back was my own 'editorial' choice :) (she most likely said "cancelled").

Thanks Dr Ralph - can I just clarify if you recall reports of QFF points deductions by credit card issuers?

It's rare, but it is possible.

In any case, I am not too stressed if I have the 75,000 points deducted from my QFF account as the annual fee was not charged. I will report back.

Yes, definitely. Particularly in cases where they were wrongly awarded.

Bonus points arrived today, 3 days after I had to remind them of my Qantas #, which hadn't stuck from the application, and 3 weeks after min spend made (a week after I got the card, day after first statement).

Annual fee hasn't posted yet...

so I just got my closure account letter. For those who have applied again, how soon after you got the letter did you apply ?

oh sorry I missed that ... need to find another good offer ... looks like the HSBC or St George for 60k points might be the way

Yep there's no active sign up bonus although as a data point, I cancelled on a Thursday and reapplied the following Monday. And was approved.

It has now been a month since I cancelled my card and the 75,000 bonus points have 'stuck'.

I managed to do the same. They hadn't charged after the second month's points came through so I paid up and cancelled immediately. I cancelled through secure messaging and it was done very quickly without anyone calling me or querying it. This and ANZ FF Black in subsequent months meant 150k QFF for no annual fee!

In hindsight, I wish I had cancelled through secure messaging like you.

I only cancelled my ANZ FF Black in October last year, so currently in the 12 exclusion period, though Mrs 2tall4Y recently cashed in on ANZ's generosity to take our household QFF balance to over a million :)
