Thanks for the tip, and yes I think your latter observation has been noted by many and so yes we are building caution into our plans. I have often travelled in "risky" areas and so I am used to being prudent.
I have been to South Africa 4 times in the last 4 years and have never felt at all at risk, but prudence is good.

Well only 4 weeks to go now. So the excitement is now rapidly building.

We have now had most of our vaccinations now including for Yellow Fever. We get the second round of Hep A/B shots not long before departure.

As we are are now in our 50's and our original vaccinations were long ago (they do need to be boosted every so often) we have also had vaccinations for Hooping Cough, Typhoid and Tetanus. This will also cover our December trip to Nepal.

For our first 2 nights in Africa a tough of "Glamping"

However a touch "riches to rags", as once we start the 4WD-ing many nights will be spent in a slightly less luxurious tent that we will put up ourselves each night...

We can't wait to begin.

Can't wait!

I've recently booked a tour in Madagascar, followed by Kenya/Tanzania in July-Aug next year. I aim to have about 10 days renting a car and doing a loop JNB-coast-CPT-JNB before heading over to Madagascar.

I look forward to hearing about your 3 month trip.

We have 7 nights in the Cape Town region. So I am currently think to speand 4/5 nights in Cape Town and also visit the Wine Region and explore the coast near Cape Town. We will now skip the Garden Route and leave it for another occasion.
Make sure you go to Hout Bay if you have the time. It is simply stunning. A drive along the toll road there is Breathtaking. If you don't have access to a car the Hop on Hop off bus does go there on one of it routes.
My only regret in going to South Africa is that anywhere else i go since is just so so.

Well we have now just returned to Australia after completing our 6 week trip from Nairobi, Kenya to Victoria Falls with a sojourn through Botswana and South Africa.

It was an amazing trip and my wife rates it our best yet. From the 4500km 4WD drive, to sampling one of africa's best restaurants in The Test Kitchen, to the stunning views and wines of the Cape Town Region, to our final 1100km drive in the Kruger Region it was a lifetime full of memories.

The wildlife was amazing and included experiences such as:
* Being on foot within 10m of two rhinos
* Being only 5m away from two mating lions
* Being only 10m away from 3 male lions with a fresh kill of an antelope with 3 jackals circling them

If you are considering a similar self-drive trip 4WD, then my advice is to go for it! I will write up a more detailed post-trip report soon.

South Africa offers some great scenery whilst being safe and comfortable. We leave in early February for our 3 month trip and we can't wait. If you need any advice then let me know.

Great TR thanks.

I didn't find SA safe. In fact it is a downright dangerous place. I lived there for three years.

It can be in parts very striking and the real people wonderful souls. But please don't describe it as safe !!
