Name change on Qantas classic reward ticket

Ive got a few flight rewards bookings (4 pax) and my sister in law has changed her name (marriage) since she has a new passport in the married name but the the booking was in the maiden name

Do we need to change the name on the flights or do you just provide the marriage certificate/ maiden name passport at check in?

We have the following flights

China Airlines (QF reward)
JAL (QF reward)
Singapore Airlines (1 paid flight & 1 VA reward)
Vietnam Airlines (Paid)
Bangkok Airways (Paid)

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but you can't change the name on those code share rewards flight.

We made the mistake last year - EK and QR J rewards then a number of paid cash flights.

My wife ended up reissuing her passport back into her maiden name (for a fee) so we could travel with her maiden name as booked on the flights.

Please make sure they get onto this with urgency as it's not a pleasant experience when you realise. There's a few stories online of people being caught out by this too.

Changing your name when booked direct is generally fine, classic reward on QF metal is fine too - it's the code share redemptions that you can't.

FWIW bringing documention is not enough for an international flight, boarding pass must match passport and they will probably be denied boarding.

Whats happens if they also bring the marriage certificate and old maiden name passport?

Update - Sister in law tried to update passport but because she has changed her birth certificate this cannot be changed for 12 months

Does anyone know if I could call QFF, cancel the tickets and get them re-issued in correct name?

Just thinking of a way to make it work?

Not sure how the birth certificate comes into play with a name change due to marriage - did she go through with an actual name change which issued a new birth certificate?

If you can't issue a new passport with the name on the booking, your only option might be to cancel them. For the reward flights, they might be released back into the inventory after a period of time, but who knows, I would assume when they're cancelled they're gone forever.

As stated up thread, if there is another airline involved, it is impossible to do a name change.

Its beyond me how they did this without realising the implications it would have.

When it happened to us we naively assumed a name correction would be fine - but that's not the case for partner bookings.

My wife didn't issue a new birth certificate (no need to actually change the name), so while it was a little hassle, she was still able to obtain a new passport in her maiden name. Then we could change the other paid flights booked directly with other airlines as a name correction which was fine.

I feel sorry for them, but it sounds like they're out of luck on this one :(
