I only need 70 status credits to make platinum on Qantas. My anniversary date is 31 March 2015.

I would really like to reach platinum, if only to ensure that if I don't reach gold again next year, I'll get the soft landing to gold.

I'm in Canberra. What would you recommend as the cheapest way to get those 70 status credits? I really need your help!

Thanks for any ideas.

If you feel like lounge hopping you could do CBR-BNE-TSV-BNE-CBR for 80 status credits in the same day on a flex ticket for just under $800...

Next weekend you can fly CBR-SYD-OOL-SYD-CBR for $698, earns 80SC and 4800 points as a flex ticket and means you don't have to worry about staying the night. Alternatively, you can make a night of it and stay the night for the same price (not including hotel expenses).

CBR - SYD J one way, flexY back.
I think I tried once and QF's online booking system will not allow more than 2 sectors a day on one PNR.
Hmm bugga, my tip is not a winner, will still be only 60.

Unless you have a different calculator from mine, CBR - SYD is only 40 for J or 45 for Flexible J and Y only netts 20 SC for Flexible (10 for discount) - so still a bit short on that one I think, would need both ways in J to get enough SCs, more expensive than the runs proposed.

Is it worth it? Everyone's view will differ I think.

For me your reasoning is valid enough (soft landing to Gold) however that also suggests you plan less QF or oneworld (OW) travel in the next year, so you would need to balance the "perks" of WP status over that of retaining SG. I mean if you feel you won't get 600SC's in your next year to keep it for the year after, perhaps the perks may not be so worth it depending on your intended travels. However it was me and I was that close, yeah I'd do it. Of course like the earlier poster I've paid more to make P1 so I'm perhaps not a good guide :)

Enjoy a night away and get a bonus for it perhaps :)

I'm with Anna here. 70SC is a very small amount of the total for Platinum. If you are doing any international travel at all on One World the following membership year then I'd definitely take that weekend away somewhere.

SG still gives you QP access, so if you don't want to spend $, and not flying internationally where you need WP to access other benefits.
1400 if this is your first year, will be hard to beat, but you can always start MS Excel planning to grab 1400 SC by next Mar. Qualify 1400 SC /requalify 1200 QF SC, eh.
Personally, I am happy to stick at SG for the next year (will have 780 QF SC soon), and then drop to PS, then pay for QP renewals.
70 SC is a lot to chase, and you have to fly QF or a partner, there is no other way (at the present) to get that 70 SC.
It won't be cheap what ever you do when on an SC chasing "mission".
Aye, SamH, yes, yes, ok, I was wrong.

Would I pay 700 x 1200/70 = $12,000 on an unnecessary trip just to requalify for WP? No.
Would that be a reasonable annual outlay on travel to requalify? Definitely.
Would I pay $700 to earn the last 70 of the 1200 SCs I need to requalify?
In a heartbeat.
Would I make a slap up weekend of it? What brand of champagne are we drinking?

Agree pf, my only devil's advocate to that is that of course one person's 70SC is not much, could be another's $700 is too much/work pays for all my travel I can't afford that spend in 2 weeks/etc etc

Do agree it's fairly easy to get for those willing :)

If think the OP is going to qualify to WP so it is 14,000, of course the wording refers to you.
Would I do it....without a moment's hesitation then think about the justifications later....if someone asks:p

Thanks everyone. I don't like spending the $700 cash, and I realized that I could do points plus pay and still get the SC. However, I'd need 65,000 points plus $200. I just used 50,000 points to upgrade from PE to J on the DFW-SYD route. That was worth a lot more than $500! So if I'm going to do this, it will have to be with cash.

The problem is that I may be moving out of Australia later this year. If so, it would great to have Platinum because the soft landing to gold will save me plenty of money in baggage fees in the US. But $700?

What is the value of Platinum over Gold, other than a fancier lounge and the soft landing the following year?
