Wondering if anyone knows if it is possible directly or via a hack to book a return flight from LHR to SYD (rather than SYD to LHR) using Velocity points?

While the calendar shows available dates, it always returns an error saying that the seats are unavailable. I assume this is because I am required to originate my itinerary in SYD.

You can book a return LHR-SYD flight on points no problem.

The problem is that calendar view is not always accurate.

Look for each leg separately. That will yield more accurate results.

I honestly hadn't thought of looking for separate legs for this one, although when I tried it with HND - SYD flights a few months ago it yielded zero results (even though the HND-SYD leg was available when searching a return booking) I was unsure if it was due to the flights originating outside of Australia.

There should be no difference in award availability searching one way vs return on Virgin. Anything you've seen to the contrary is a glitch.
