Status

Apparently the world will not end if I don't achieve the same status this year. Of course the world might end if we all do, as the completely pointless exercise will add more pollution to the planet and cause major problems for our descendants to deal with.
You must be really bored. I have much more serious issues like my backspace button not working properly since I travelled down from Brisbane.

My life will still be the same if I am Platinum, Gold, Silver or whatever but just for the fun of it I will try to remain Platinum for as long as I can, as I am commuting SYD-BNE at my expense almost every week, although I tend to agree with you about so called "status runs". It would appear that more people are interested in them purely for the sake of getting status and then flying more just to retain that status. It sounds crazy but it is real....

Some people have 100 sets of shoes, some people buy Ferrari's and park them outside coffee shops. Others have the biggest bbq in the street.

They're all different forms of what you're claiming.

I'd be interested in why you think people fly for status. Would make for some interesting reading. Or do you think it's just for the 'wrist' value?

Having done status runs either in their purest form (SYD-CBR-SYD-CBR-SYD....) and in their more subtle forms (SYD-HKG-FRA-HEL-LHR rather than SYD-LHR) I can advise that this has very little to do with ego and totally to do with better enjoyment of my long travel experience.

As other people have commented there are lots of things that people do that harm the environment and I wont judge another person for an element of their life unless I can say with certainty that my life is "pure" in that regard.

You said you travel for work and leisure - why not get a job that doesn't involve flying and catch a train to your next holiday destination - or do you need to stroke your ego by having a big powerful job that requires you to fly and can brag about overseas holidays to your friends?

It is easy to pick holes in peoples's lives - slightly harder to make a positive contribution to the forum.

Move to NZ, and do the status runs on Jetstar.

If you can get 140 flights on Jetstar Savers at 5c  , and fly them before the end of the year, then you could qualify for WP for $7 . If you really lucky and got them for 1c (during the last Twitter sale), then you could get WP for $1.40.

Shame that the sales weren't for this year, or I expect someone with far too much free time would have done this.

Does this beat the bus?

Also, what does this mean for the value of WP (ignoring the value of points earnt) ?

I travel for work and pleasure, so I admit I am producing more than my fair share of carbon. But to do it for status .....

To do it purely for status is not something I would do, but to some extent it is about what comes with the status that may be of value. While I wouldn't spend my weekends flying backwards and forwards between cities to retain platinum, I can see why someone might want to do a weekend run if they needed a handful of SC to retain Gold and the Qantas Club membership that goes with it.

Everyone has there own ways of valuing these things.

Well said oz_mark, I love flying and doing international in J is part of me looking after me, while I can afford it I will do it. Having SG status means that I usually get good seats for my Y trips which is always worth it.

As other posters have noted we all spend time and money things that have value and interest to ourself. I'm not interested in some things other people do (well most things actually ;) ) but I respect their choice.

This site is for those of us who have a particular interest in flying and all of its permutations. One of those is status, vive la différence.

I am a QFF member - was gold to 30 Sep 2008 and then dropped to PS. Due to the coughpy domestic seating allocations for AA EXP I have switched back to QFF. I have been lucky enough to be comped to WP with 0 SCs YTD due to a corporate situation.

So that would explain why you're now saying Rock on Corporate TA's rather than waging war on them! ;)

Corp TA's can be rock stars if they want to be and they also be the kind of people you want to wage war on ! i know the feeling well.
But i do wonder how he got is corp TA to do such a thing. I presume it was a corp status match.

The plane is going to fly anyway regardless of whether someone is on there for a status run or not.

Anyway, I do "status runs" for pleasure and study. 2 examples; a very noice few hours in Canberra with a mate (best friend from school); and a day in birssy at uni for a 3 hour training session related to doing my PhD. I didn't need to do these trips, I didn't need have a brew with my mate or do the training session. But I did and partly because of the cheap status available if I did.

Forget the USA the easiest way would be to do 9 SIN-BKK business class returns with CX for 1080 SCs and I am sure you can use your imagination for the remaining 10 SCs.

I didn't realise CX had this special on again! I remember in 11/07 I used this as per this thread. I have to revisit BKK. I have fond memories.

If its back to special prices i will be in for a few quick runs as weekends away :)

So AUD 437.27 for 120 SC. At AUD 3.64 / SC, you can't complain about that at all!

I guess the only thing left is to work out how to get the positioning flights (viz how much are you prepared to pay - or cough up points).

Not an issue for positioning if you are based a lot of the time in SIN though...

Actually it was the QF corporate account manager really. In reality the TA was pretty useless re this...

<..>

Exactly :) and if your based here a lot you would actually use this as a getaway ! not even just sc/miles earn.

I need 480 SCs before 31May09 to retain PG . No more travel booked for this month so I guess MrsDot is going to drop back to NB for the first time in four years... The price of an all Y policy change last Nov

Won't she drop back to PS rather than NB?
I don't think so, I think PGs miss out on the soft landing - the reason I think that is because one year, I was about 100 SCs short of PG requalification in January, she got a letter saying that she would be dropping back to NB (despite me having another five months of travel ahead of me and easily requalifying by my aniversary date at the end of May). By the end of Jan that year, I had easily exceeded PG requalification level, so we just ignored the letter...

When Mrs NM dropped from PG status due to me not achieving 2100 SCs, she had a soft landing back to Silver and the following year back to Bronze. She was given an invitation for paid Qantas Club membership without the joining fee. So as far as I can tell, she was treated the same as any other Gold member who does not meet the re-qualification requirements.
