Yep. All ticketed ok! Very surprised to be honest but a good result.
A little annoying that they couldn't find any later QF SYD-BNE. Would that likely have been a lazy agent? There are heaps of seats available on all of the evening flights. I guess I can go for dinner in Bris or something!

Just call back and ask to change the flight to a later one, there is no charge for minor changes on AA
I stumbled across this internet site yesterday - it is obvious that there are a lot of clever people who know how to 'work' the system. Very impressed!
Example; 12/02/2016 QF63 SYD-JNB, and BA6399 JNB-MRU (says operated by Comair)
I would call back , give it a day or two , maybe the AA booking system is out of sync ??
Thanks, another option to consider for island holiday. Resort prices in MRU look very reasonable.
Dammit! This has got me interested now!! This is a real sweet spot of the program
Have a look at the Four Season over Christmas... $1500EUR/night.. bargain!
If you must go during Xmas and if you must stay at FS it will cost you accordingly.
I found some good prices in Nov like: €145 for Westin or €50 + 16K points at Hilton.

Worth it IMO - FS is brilliant!

Mrs Rugby and I first joined American two years ago, but today was my first outing with AA miles and it went quite smoothly with only a couple of quirks. I called a local Sydney number, no need for Skype etc, which diverted to their call centre who quickly checked availability for SYD-NRT J, they had JAL and I reserved a return booking. I then purchased the miles, but had to use both our AA memberships as we needed more than 160000 miles, so purchased 90,000 each. I then called back to pay and had to split the original booking due to using two accounts, and I had to pay taxes using credits card in our separate names, which seemed odd that I couldn't pay for my wife's, but no big deal. All in all easier than expected, so assuming the tickets issue with no problems - happy days and one of the best tips I learned from AFF when I first joined. Glad I got to finally use it. Thanks to the forum.
I had a few more quirky moments with AA when I had to ring back because my booking hadn't ticketed, Mrs Rugby's was fine, and to allocate seats. Apparently mine hadn't ticketed because their system wouldn't accept my card for the taxes - this was the same card I used to buy the miles online, so go figure. Mrs Rugby's card, which is on the same account had been fine for her taxes - the vagaries of CCs. I used another card and that was sorted.
I then had to get the JAL PNRs, different to the AA PNRs, to go onto the JAL website and select seats. The AA consultant was sure there was only one JAL PNR for the both of us even though two bookings. That PNR turned out to be for Mrs Rugby only, so I gave AA a couple of days and rang back and got my correct JAL PNR and selected my seats. All's well that ends well.
