New amaysim roaming plans April 2023

We have just come back from 6 weeks overseas.
I bought the $70 pack, I used all of the 100 minutes as we had a BA flight canceled and it took me about an hour on the phone to get that sorted. Then had to call the car rental place, which ate up more minutes. I used my data for two weeks of driving around the uk with Waze navigation. All up used about 3G of data. Used about a quarter of the SMS.
Husband bought the $25 pack, used almost all his data, used all his SMS and all of his chat minutes.
I thought all up it was good value for us as we really needed the chat minutes to sort out cancelations etc. Data was good and my biggest advantage I kept my number.
And the fact that you can roll it over a big plus too.
I would highly recommend amaysim !

Japan is listed as one of the eligible roaming countries. Has it worked elsewhere for you? Or is this the first time you’ve tried to use it OS?

If you haven’t already, you must enable “International roaming” via the amaysim app settings (preferably before you leave Oz). I believe you have to do that to receive SMS overseas (even without a roaming pack).

Note: the process requires a OTP. You won’t be able to receive the code via SMS if already OS but there is an email option.

Yes, it’s the talk/text I want to have most importantly from amaysim (on my main phone number). I have plenty of existing 3rd party eSIM data and options to top up. Just the convenience of only using one line is a nice to have (saves on battery usage).

BTW, a lot of places are using WhatsApp now that allow you to call / message them over wifi or data.

Oh thanks, I am new to amaysim roaming and didn't know they had a toggle there. Every other company so far is auto network connection (then try to sell you the roaming packs).

Just bought my first $20

Coming back to the main topic of this thread, I’m pondering what is the Goldilocks option(s) in the roaming packs?

I switched over almost two months ago and quite happy so far. SYD+1 switched slightly earlier and is already OS with the basic $20 calls/txt 365 days pack and using a 3rd party Flexiroam eSIM and wifi for data. All good.

I head OS next month and my current thinking is to do the same - amaysim for calls/txt and seperate eSIM for data. The $20 “Smalltalk” pack for a years roaming calls/ texts (within the 100/100 limit), is an excellent deal and a no brainer as a starting point. If you happen to burn through minutes or txt, you can just renew for a further $20 and unused credits rollover.

However, having some included “Global” roaming data - for the convenience factor - would be nice eg the $25 “The Works” pack.

A$5 extra for 2 GB of “Global” data for 1yr, is actually quite cheap compared to the 3rd party roaming eSIM providers. Whilst 2GBs doesn’t sound like much, it can provide that connectivity while transiting somewhere and then rely on Country and Regional plans for the bulk of one’s travels at your destination(s).

But, you lose out on half the talk time and 70% of the texts. Probably manageable but seems a backward step?

My understanding (and discussed briefly earlier) is you can stack roaming packs and rollover unused allowances. So I guess you could buy a $20 pack plus the $25 pack to get even more call time and text but still only 2GB of data…

Or the $20 pack plus the $50 “Just Gigs” 5GB data only pack but the $70 “The Epic” pack comes with 9GB of data - same number of minutes as the $20 plan but only 60% of the text….

They do seem to have made this more difficult than it ought to be!

For A$50 extra for 9GB of “Global” data compared to 3rd party providers also isn’t too bad. The usuals (Flexiroam, Airalo etc outside of promos/sales) would be close to US$50.

So the $70 “The Epic” could seem the way to go?

But “Global” data roaming, whilst terribly convenient cost significantly more than one or more stacked “Country” and “Regional” eSIM plans.

So slightly annoying that they don’t just have a pack that is the $20 bundle plus some Gigs for say $25 or $30! That would probably be Goldilocks for me….

So I ended up going with the 12mth / $20 bundle calls / text only (no data) plan. It just seems to be the most obvious and extremely good value compared to the big telco daily roaming charges - if you’re happy to use a 3rd party eSIM (or another local SIM) for data.

As an aside, SYD+1 and I both ported to amaysim a few months ago (but about a month apart) and both on the $30 / 32GB / 28d plan (which is the cheapest 5G enabled plan). About a month ago, SYD+1 was automatically upgraded to 55 GB pm (for no additional charge). The same offer landed for me yesterday. Neither of us come close to using the initial 32GB per month, throw in data banking and now 55GB, we’ll be swimming and bits…

Just a heads up that I experienced a bit of a glitch yesterday. Landed at CGK around 7pm and phone connected straight away. Turned on Flexiroam for data and received an email from amaysim confirming that I was roaming but no text message. While trying to order a Grab the app wanted an authorisation code to use my 28° MC but no text messages were coming through. Fortunately the Latitude in app 2FA was working.

Still nothing this morning, so I doubled checked that “Roaming” was enabled in the amaysim App (it was). Shortly after (not sure if a coincidence) but around 07:00am a bunch of texts arrived…Hopefully, it’ll just work from here on but I’ll try and see if I can report it to amaysim.

I've had that delayed text message issue before on Optus roaming in the UK, and exactly the same issue with needing a SMS code that often expires within a few minutes. Sometimes making a phone call will trigger them to come through, or try switching networks to manually connect to another local network.
