They will probably be changed to AA 1:1 but who's to say there won't be a devaluation? We've seen a preview with some of the changes they've made to the AAdvantage (not that it affects us in Oz) but still... I wouldn't recommend buying USDM simply to hope that all will be the same once the programs merge. Buy only if you have specific redemptions in mind and the seats are there.

I agree wholly

A devaluation will affect both program's, so if your stockpiling it make sense to do US rather than AA given the lower unit cost for acquisition.

I understand. I just don't recommend stockpiling.

Dont disagree with the argument but that's somewhat of a different argument (since it affect both) than an argument to why buy US over AA. I agree there will be a devaluation to the US chart, the most likely devaluation by far is that it will be aligned with the AA chart, but my others points (cheaper, ability to buy more points per year remains). And frankly the devaluation argument applies to both airlines, AA can also devalue.

Devaluation is a potential problem for both programs but in the meantime US is still (sometimes considerably) cheaper and for now has cheaper redemption.

Well I bit the bullet and bought the miles. We now have to wait for the booking engines to catch up. We are cruising to Europe from Sth. America in March 2015 and returning mid April 2015, I am hoping to be able to book Etihad 1st class ....... anyone had experience on booking on Etihad using AA miles?

If you are talking about Europe-Australia on Etihad (it's not clear in your post), you can book them, but you do not pay the Europe-Australia (South Pacific) price.
You have to pay for two awards: Europe-Middle East and Middle East-SP.
In J it is 30+45k. In F - 40+60k.

Which is absurd. Ive tried arguing after the told me lhr-auh-mel exceeds mpm but they are ok to book lhr-dxb-mel with qf

That's because LHR-xDXB-MEL is on a single flight number which is considered a direct flight.
AFAIK the rules for Europe to SP are that you can connect (ie change flight numbers) in a select number of Asian cities. With QR now in OW, I don't know if that has changed to include DOH.
