New Baggage crackdown starts this week at VA

QF MEL-CBR yesterday they were announcing it at the gate and weighing carry on luggage.
On disembarking I overheard one lady ask the FA where she could collect her bag from that was confiscated at the gate

I guess this is basically what this "crackdown" is all about really. VA still showing its LCC tendencies.

I'd disagree here. If that was the case then they wouldn't have someone at the premium entries as everyone (except lifetime lounge members) has an allowance of more than one bag and in theory would be within the checked allowance assuming they haven't already checked luggage.

Sure on some flights, they do only target the general boarding lane but there is too much inconsistency to be a revenue-raising exercise. However, it is a nice way to get an extra $70 from each overweight passenger :)

Qantas is doing the same... no idea if anyone actually been charged on Qantas yet but in theory exceeding the QF allowance with a bag already checked in would involve a $78 extra bag fee.

Jetstar, on the other hand, makes it very clear they do it for revenue raising. They'll walk down the boarding queue and weight bags whilst charging if over. Domestically Jetstar will let you upgrade from a 7kg carry on baggage allowance to a 10kg one for $60 (card only) or you can go up to 15kg but have to check it in at the gate for the same $60 fee.

No weighing BNE-CNS this afternoon,

And for those who asked earlier about wifi speed, here it is at the moment (rough guess above Gladstone area).

Is that on the free plan?

I ended up on a wifi plane over the weekend (BNE-SYD) and the free speed was 1mbps (15x slower than Qantas).

I guess the baggage crackdown has created extra space for Business, Gold and Platinum. In short, 2x 7kg bags are now allowed for Gold, Platinum and Business passengers on Domestic, Trans Tasman and Short Haul international routes.

As a WP, I flew J with 2 x backpacks, 1 at 7kg and the other at 5kg. Check in lady said carry on had to be no more than 7kg combined. I asked her whether that had recently changed and I'm now allowed 7kg each. She said no, 7kg combined. I accepted that (as I hadn't bothered to check the links @henrus provided) and checked one of them. I've now looked and confirmed that yes, I was in fact entitled to 2 x 7kg's (which actually makes HLO very doable for me), so my MO from now on will be to head straight to the lounge to check in.

No weighing of bags at the gate on CNS-BNE yesterday morning (737 older style of overheads).

Recently flew VA, ADL-SYD-ZQN and WLG-BNE-ADL, no weight checks if fact 2 pax had bags they could not fit in the overhead locker.
Internet speed not measured but met all my needs.

No bag weighing evident on any of my flights last weekend.

The evidence here would suggest that everything is back to normal.... unless you are unfortunate enough to be flying on the Rat.

QF have changed their rules. Previously 2 x 7kg bags can now be taken on as 1 x 10kg and 1 x 4kg. Apparently they think that X% of people carry between 7-10kg so this will allow them to use 1 bag and use less overhead locker space, rather than people with 9-10kg of stuff having to use 2 bags as they do now due to the 7kg limit.

Let’s hope the last man standing VA folds and makes a quick sensible decision to follow...

VA have already changed the allowance for Business, Gold and Platinum members - 2 x 7kg, rather than 1x7 and a personal item.

Again, let’s hope they follow the lead and increase their max limit.

VA are sitting ducks if they don’t move fast to copy. They could get a jump on QF and implement first! Cmon Virgin!! Going to be a total PITA flying QF one way and VA back HLO and having to repackage to suit VA’s smaller limit!

I'm not sure I'd agree with your sitting duck analogy. VA have for years had a 7kg all up HL limit whilst QF had 2 x 7kg. VA have only recently changed that for status and certain fares. I'm not entirely sure they'd feel compelled to match QF.

Have to agree. They haven't felt compelled to match QF to date. Even the last set of changes didn't bring them into line with QF.

Can't see then rushing into it here.
