New Carry On Backpack

Picked up a Lowepro Fastpack 350 in the last few days to use as my carry on for future trips:

Will be interested to see how I go with it, it has a number of features I like including the dedicated SD Card storage area, and the easy access to my notebook/IPAD via the side, very handy at security checkpoints. I suspect it will also be handy for overnighters when not packing the DSLR, as I can use that storage area for clothes etc.

Are you replacing a roll-aboard with this back pack?

The side access to laptop/ipad storage is definitely a nice feature.

Though, in my old age (32) I'm really starting to hate the idea of having more than a couple of kilograms strapped to my back.

Replacing a Rollaboard as its capacity is very similar and I suspect only 2-3L less, weight is a lot less. If I am not packing the camera I suspect I will be able to do a two-three day trip with around 8Kg total weight, luckily I have a light lappie. Longer trips for leisure means a checked bag and the luxury of having the DSLR and bits at hand as cabin baggage while being protected from damage and theft.

Agree - I bought a Tom Bihn Tri-Star last year and absolutely love it. It's super light, very cleverly designed. I have taken a number of 7 - 10 day business trips to Southeast Asia with just that bag, and saved myself so much time on the luggage carrousels (anyone who has waited for their international bags at Adelaide Airport will know what I mean....), as I typically take about 8 flights within that week.

I recenty picked up a Kathmandu Litehaul Pack v2 on sale for $99.

Mine is light blue; they seem to change the colours they sell fairly regularly. Its 38L, domestic carry on size. Has a laptop pouch and can be used as either a backpack or shoulder bag.

I've only used it a little bit, but if you don't need to pack business shirts, its a great bag. If I need to travel for work, I need a hard case so I don't have to iron at the other end.

Dick Smith bags are cheaper than Lowepro but their quality might be different. It's Blackwolf backpacks for me, Everki is so so.

I've got an Ogio Renegade. I love the different pockets and sections and the separate padded laptop section makes it a breeze through security.
