"New" International Economy Class Dining

Just got back from LHR to Mel and yet again ( 3rd long range this year 2 uk 1 USA ) ..... I would have preferred salad, fruit salad ,cheese and biscuits a bread roll and butter to either of the hot meals. Why *** about with wagyu pre done pre flight and probably only just edible when a third option of a cold plate would suit even vegetarians and be simple. Yes, sometimes the lettuce is a little aged. Thats fixable . No freaking lettuce but there are plenty of other salad leaves that travel well... better than some of the meat and pasta dishes.
Personally I dont want a full gut of protein on a 22 hour flight ..
As for wine , aperitifs etc ... gimme a break . Some folk would moan if their back side was on fire and the aperitif was used to douse the flames. "wine whine wine whine wine "

It's a 12 hour flight. Precisely why shouldn't I expect to have a pre-meal drink in business class. It is not as if they don't have the time. The point remains they might as well not even list those drinks because they are not a viable option given how the service is performed. Basically the aperitif can't be used to douse the flames. That you don't understand the issue doesn't diminish the importance for others.

I hope that they've managed to get Q Eats right in premium cabins before they try the more complex task of rolling it out in economy.

My own experience of Q Eats is a combination of being totally forgotten for the ordered entrée, and given the wrong meal as the main, followed by an "oh dear, never mind, would you like an ice cream instead" attitude from the cabin crew at the time, and when I addressed the problem again later with customer care the initial response I received didn't actually correspond to the complaint that I was making.

Good luck with this, I won't be risking Q Eats again.

Not sure what business drinks has to do with new economy dining.

:confused: I imagine the carnivorous drinkers amongst us feel similarly about your "salad whine"! ;)
 
I see this as a positive move forward in terms of better selection and less waste for Qantas and look forward to seeing a menu.

is 'infused' the new catering buzz word?

It means they have added water to it to help keep it moist and also to add weight so you are paying say $8 to $15 per kilo for water. Good way to increase profit margins :) Seems to be a lot of moisture infused products in the UK ie put the bacon in the pan with no fat heat it up and 30 seconds later watch it shrink then empty the water from the pan.

Not so sure moisture infused is a good idea LOL :)

I'm talking about the logistics of how they've done away with the tray. What are you talking about? Or are you just talking nonsense and not contributing in any way to the topic?

I suspect that perhaps waiting to see how it works and tastes is probably what was being suggetsed here , rather than shooting it down "Before" it launches.
 
At the end of the day, IMHO, the meal service and the IFE are the things that have the greatest impact on long-haul travel. They are the things that distract the person from the hideousness of being packed in like sardines.

Hopefully the new QF Y product is a winner.

And hopefully I dont suffer a setback in my working life and thus have to experience it :)

I wasn't shooting it down at all, which part of my comment was shooting it down. Please elaborate? I was just talking about how the meal would be distributed. That's it. I don't get how this is shooting it down.

Here is my comment:

"So it would seem without the tray you are handed a plastic plate with the meal, and then given a dessert or similar in a plastic package along with your pre-wrapped plastic cutlery. So you put it all out separately on the table. And the bread roll is also physically handed to the person? or maybe sat on top of the meal. Presumably there is no side salad anymore"

Just another reason not to shop at IGA, Aldi etc etc

I have no intention of trying the "infused" bread, just as I've no intention of ever eating a breakfast muffin with a shelf-life half that of Poochie's beloved 767s.

I note the menu lists Aperitifs. As a general rule, I want to have an aperitif before the meal. Does this mean I will be able to get an aperitif before my meal?

My last business flight LHR-SYD involved no pre-dinner drink service. When I requested to be served both an aperitif and wine to have with my meal I was told they can't serve me 2 drinks at once. So this would suggest that I have to wait for the meal service, get my pre-dinner drink, enjoy that, wait for someone to then serve me wine all while the meal goes cold.

All of which makes me wonder why Qantas even bother pretending there is anything that could even remotely be considered an aperitif.

This is so true with QF. I find AF and BA to be two airlines which really understand the concept of aperitif before meal.
The other thing I don't understand with J and F service on most airlines is that the cabin crew rarely asks if one would like to drink a different wine with the appetizer or main.

Virgin manage a pre-departure drink, a drink while they take dinner orders, then another drink with every course. No issue having two or more wines on my table at any one time.

Bring on the sour vinaigrette! I must be in the minority here.

They don't do a lot of justice to the side salad in J anyway. Basically a handful of green leaves - would it be so hard to offer a tailored salad service (greens, cherry tomatoes, red onions, grated carrot, olives)...... hey, there's an idea - someone tell QF...



That's a shame because I like rocket and parmesan. In many cases, the rocket has lost its pepper quality (no idea why) so it doesn't sting, but when it does I can see it is polarising.

Not sure why coleslaw and baby spinach go together.

"Butter infused bread"... so in other words it's just bread with butter.

Gee... and the conflict in the Falkland Islands seems all so trivial now. :rolleyes:

FWIW the sample menu on AusBT shows that garlic bread is available on that flight. I wonder if this is part of the "butter infused bread" selection.
