Speaking of money...

The front page of the Wet Australian last week had the headline story about the pay deal for workers on the Gorgon project on Barrow Island where the agreed minimum wage for labourers was $150K. They did say it was a for a 70 hour week though. While that sounds like a lot of hours the reality is that there's bugger all to do if you knock off at 3pm anyway so you might as well earn more money. I say this as someone who worked on a remote farm in my early days. No point working less than a 10 hour day, what are you going to do when you knock off?
I think it also said it was 21 days on, 9 days off but I may be wrong. Three weeks straight without a day off is hard in anyone's language.

There's a reason booze is so expensive up there too. When you're earning that much, the bars can charge it, and the fact they are usually so remote makes the justification for them even easier:)

If I were to work up there, I think i'd buy up a bar. Would seem like an easier way to make money :D

Hm, my experience with my last few trips up there was the prices were very much so on par, sometimes even cheaper for a pint off tap.

Heading up to PBO and ZNE in 2 weeks, will have a look then. Challenge accepted!

In my time in NQ exploration we did five weeks on & two weeks off - basically you got your weekends back. I commuted from northern NSW to Georgetown on some very rough charters, then had to drive to the camp:(

Every site is different.

I remember a few years ago, there was no bar in the camp at Mt Magnet. So, l went to the local and it cost me almost $20 for a 6-pack of Hahn Lite. Crazy prices. Leanora was also expensive.

Flying out of PDO tomorrow morning, l'll check out the prices at the airport (which is usually expensive as we all know) and have a couple too :)

Pendopo, Indonesia? Or did you mean PBO? ;)

Yeah that's correct. I'm aware of another high flying member here also slips into the PPE gear at times as part of his work.

Appearances are deceiving. Stereotypes are also bad.

Hear hear! Amen!

I recall reading that DJ, or an associated airline, was also looking at MEL-NW Oz flights, with their new 737-900s maybe, in the reporting of their profit result.

I am not sure thats really a factor, I suspect the direct flights have been on the wishlist for a while once BNE-KTA proved to be a winner, now that QF have the 767 capacity coming back to the domestic legs it frees up the 738s for new opportunities.
How long has BNE-KTA been around? I know my brother did it about 2.5 years ago. but i also though I had other family members do it even earlier than that.

My Uncle has been up (KTA) there 20 to 30 year. There are better ways to make money than even a bar. ;).

I've always thought being a haul truck driver would be the way to go. Rather boring job but A/C and load up the ipod learn a language or something. The mine i was at 10 years ago they were earning 100k to 150k then, in the mining slump. (the benefits of being in the production department)

Nov 07 was the launch of the services direct.

Not a bad way to go. I worked at Paraburdoo 1996-99 (I'm a Mining Engineer), and did a stint driving trucks.

I only did it for about 8 months, but that was enough for me - I found it way too boring, but that was when I was young and ambitious ... I may not feel the same way now :)

Maybe not new, but I've just booked a DRW-CBR direct flight on QF for August.

Didn't even know such a flight existed, but I'll happily take it. Saves a heck of a lot of time and messing aound.

Been around for a little while now, good to see some more options for normal hour departures out of DRW as I am up there every month, it was announced with the increase use of 767s on domestic flights a little while ago.

Sorry for the late reply, just changed ISP's and it took a while for the new modem.
Anyways, the all important beer prices at PHE Airport.
Low/Mid-strength beers were $6.50
Full strength beers, $7:50
Import beers, $8.50

I just went for the Corona's. Had a few.

The plane coming back to Perth on Tuesday was empty, l counted about 23 people in total and 4 F/A's.
Here is a picture taken from row 21. Not the best quality, my mobile is outdated to say the least.

Hey Flashware,
No QP at PHE. Would have been to early, arrived at 9am 'ish.

There's a lounge just behind the check-in counters... or at least there was last time I was in PHE. The lady lets you in, as it's not public access.

Yeh this is not completely new, but is fairly recent. Find it more than just a little bizarre that QF can find a market for DRW-CBR, yet not MEL-DRW, which is all on Deathstar, something that DJ has exploited I guess. I am assuming that DRW-CBR is somewhat reliant defence traffic.

Its one of the regional lounges - expect Coffs to be added soon to that list!

Was there last year when I went through.

Small room. About 10-15 seats. Small cupboard with chips, pretzels, bottles of wine and beers in the fridge. View over the tarmac. :)
