I'm travelling again after the Christmas break and have been using the new Optus wifi in Melbourne and Brisbane lounges. Very impressed by the speed to log in.

Anyway, I am having problems with my personal email on my tablet and I think it is because it's an Optus POP. It works fine everywhere else, eg on my home wireless and work. It won't allow me to retrieve mail

Has anyone got the same problem, and managed to resolve it? I can work with webmail in the Lounge, but I like to download my email and read it on the plane.

Can't believe in all these years this question wasn't answered... You are right, it is because it is an Optus POP. But I think the problem was with sending mail. You should be able to retrieve it OK with your password, but sending mail would require a secure connection which you might have by now. I use the Gmail outgoing server personally which means I can send mail via any wireless connection.

Thanks Walter, I have years of experience with the quirks of Optus sending email, but I have never had any problems getting it. Everything worked fine last year in the lounge with the old internet provider, but I now suddenly have problems since Optus took over - although I used my phone before and now use the tablet. So I wondered if it was an 'optus to optus' problem.

I haven't had time to play with the email settings.

The problem is usually when your email provider is different from the wifi's provider. But if you use Optus and the wifi is Optus there should be no problems... Easy way out is to probably call the Optus support number if your email is with them as well :)

I'm in SYD at the moment... Had the same problems with Microsoft Entourage (Optus POP3) ... After being connected for about 20 mins, it seems to have sorted itself out...

In Brisbane lounge at present and a huge difference / improvement in speed.. And lots of people here on line( Sydney flight delayed by a passing storm)

We are fortunate enough to have almost reasonable download limits on the phone/PDAs. So i tend to find it easier to use my own Internet by disabling wireless and not having to deal with those annoying 'do you want to connect' messages. Of course if I want to do data intensive work I might decide to connect to the wireless... Certainly not just to check my email.

You need to try the new lounge wi fi.. Great. As good as you'll get at home or work
