Not only the UK and US but Canada is considering a ban as well.
And there is this bit-

UK flight ban on electronic devices announced - BBC News

BBC news said the UK move seemed to be part of coordinated action.

It appears the attempted downing of an airliner in Somalia last year has been linked to a laptop device and the security precautions are an attempt to deter similar incidents.

Christ. The stupidity of the world we live in just gets more mind boggling every day. Moving a lot of (mostly) lithium battery devices into the hold...where bags are known to be crushed..what could possibly go wrong? Atleast in the cabin a fire can be located quickly and dealt with. As a HLO traveller I'm hoping this extra security theatre doesn't spread to other routes.

Call me a simpleton, but I would have thought CoL would be subjected to more in-depth screening than checked?

Besides, what's to stop a device being turned on prior to baggage check?

I'd be more worried about the potential of a fire from a switched on laptop that overheats in the hold.

Emirates is trying to minimise the potential backlash stemming from the new rules: Emirates: 'Who needs tablets and laptops anyway?'

The problem is that I guess a lot of people, including myself, don't use their laptop to watch movies or listen to music...

You can bet that the EU won't be far behind either.

I'm flying from Istanbul to Rome on TK next week, so there goes my laptop. No way will I put it in checked baggage (which I don't usually have anyway). I suppose I could always ferry a laptop out to my sister in the UK (I have 4 laptops, so not a problem). But a bit of a pain anyway.

Pretty soon most advanced countries at least will have this ban in place, so in future I won't be travelling with a laptop or camera at all, particularly as I visit the Middle East and Turkey quite often. So I will just carry a couple of smartphones.

Hardly odd for people to be so suspecting of fake news when there is so much of it around.

My first thought when I heard about this was that it cannot be true. I still see a lot of people working on laptops during flights - that time is valuable to them. And who's going to be willing to risk their laptop in the "tender" hands of the baggage handling system? Bags thrown around, theft, the odd zip breakage, all these things are common. No thanks.

My first thought was that passengers with the means and ability will be cancelling flights on affected airlines and re-routing themselves elsewhere. Which led me to speculate as to whether it will negatively affect the airlines involved, and help the other airlines. Which means I was unsurprised when I read the WaPo's article suggesting exactly that. I don't think it's all that far-fetched at all. It's like a Yes, Minister script. (except that the Brits fell for it and have knobbled their own flagship airline) In my head, I can speculate exactly how the discussion went down...

Also, if it gets larger, with domestic airlines moving towards a BYO-device model and entertainment delivered wirelessly, this is going to be a nightmare. I'm not squinting at my phone screen for 5 hours or more transcon (bad enough QF's tiny iPads!) for entertainment. Not to mention, with no screen to distract people from their increasingly tiny and uncomfy seats, and tiny box meals, the likelihood of air rage will increase.

All very true, but the Donald gets his way (and his supporters are very happy!), so what's not to like?

All the more reason to have a few more drinks before and during the flight!
