I'd like to feedback a negative (sorry).
As someone who has to type in the address (as I use multiple different computers, all of which get their history/favourites routinely deleted), it's pretty annoying at how long it is now.
Frankly, I cant see the necessity for the name change.
As an internet entrepreneur for the last 12 years I can't work out why anyone would want to increase the length of their domain name :?:
So the next logical question is, how much did Qantas pay you for the domain?
Whilst this is a site run by Admin, we (the gold/silver members) do pay for access and privileges, which should allow us some say in things.
Admin is perfectly within his right to profit from the site as he does sink a large amount of time and effort into keeping us fussy FF'ers happy. That said, I have to agree with peoples general ideas here.
Short of being bought (the domain name) by someone (say, QFF), I fail to see the reason for change. It was stated the change more accurately reflects the actual name of the board, but IMHO any name change that makes it longer to enter into a URL bar is a bad thing. Companies pay a fortune for smaller domain names (I have a 4 letter domain name in .
net.au and .
com.au domains, and they're pretty tough to come by now).
Add to that the investment in time and money that several members have made for luggage tags that have the old domain name in, and surely they can't feel too wonderful about the domain name change.
As mentioned though, if the domain has been acquired, Admin may well be subject to an NDA that prohibits anything being said. As the whois database for .
com.au and .
net.au domains changed a while back to not show domain name expiration dates (to prevent poachers and domain 'squatters' from taking advantage) there is no way of finding out the exact expiry of the old domain either.
It won't stop me from visiting the site, but if it was simply to reflect the name, I feel it's a step backwards not forwards.
Just my 2c.
