New WP need advice re LAX

Just achieved WP thanks to several years reading advice from AFF! My question is re Lax. My SO and I ARR on a United flight into LAX mid afternoon & Dept on QF12 at22.20.
Can we transfer between terminals airside? (Our bags will apparently be able to be checked thru to SYD). What is our best plan of attack to get into the first lounge ASAP?

Arriving on UA (T6/T7), you cannot transfer airside to TBIT (or T4 for that matter).

Moreover, being on QF12, which departs from TBIT, you are not supposed to be able to access T4.

If you have a boarding pass for QF12 then you will be allowed through security screening a TBIT and into the OneWorld Lounge. If you do not have a Boarding Pass you will need to Check-in at TBIT first.

Given that you have a reasonable amount of time it's a fairly easy walk from T7 to TBIT (approx 5~10 mins) rather than stuff around with a shuttle bus.

If you go up the escalators outside T7 it's nicer walking on the departures level than in the gloom of the arrivals level.
Even though your bags may be checked through I think you may still need to check in at the Qantas desk.

Once you have checked in at the Qantas area, then go to the security screening area on the RH side of the terminal as once you have cleared security then the elevator to the J & F Lounge is directly in front of you as you exit the screening area.

It's a long story but SO is in PE & I am in J (don't get me started on travel agents). On our outbound flight I did not check in on line and the girl at the check in desk said" can't have you 2 in different classes "and made a phone call to get SO upgraded!
I am wondering on our homeward flight what should I do... I presume United wont give us a boarding pass. So should I check in on line or wait till the desk again ? As we are into LAX early in the afternoonwill they let me check in so early??? HELP!

Check-in at LAX open 2pm (http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/airport-guide-los-angeles/global/en).

If you are on the one booking your bags will be interlined UA->QF and you won't see them at LAX -you'll see them you get to Australia.
