Can anyone recommend any good places to stay in May next year.

Looking at the moment, but nothing is cheap!!

Welcome to AFF, so tell us what your standards are, define cheap, whereabouts you want to visit etc. When you say New York do you mean state or city? I'm assuming city but we need to be sure. :)

Are you loyal to a hotel brand? Would you stay in a youth hostel?

Cheap, being under $200/250. Main tourist attractions, ie Times Square, Central Park, WTC etc

Not loyal to a brand, but no to Hostel. Toddler free trip with my wife.

I stayed at Hotel 31 on E 31st in Manhattan. Check the interweb for prices but it's not bad for NY.

It was an older hotel in NY but perfectly fine. It's about 1 minute walk to Lexington Ave, around 5 minutes walk to the 6 subway line & the Empire State Building. 15 - 20 min walk to Penn station & Madison Square Garden.

As you are finding, nothing is cheap in NYC. One alternative I used a couple of years ago when it was weeks old is the Holiday Inn at Long Island City-Manhatten View. It is newish, quite comfortable and very accessible to Manhatten via the subway and Times Square is 5 minutes away. There is nothing of interest in the sketchy but safe area immediately around the hotel and it's attraction is that it is a good property with great access. Prices in May look to be in the $200-$250 range. Worth a look in my view.

I stayed at the Waldorf-Astoria for two nights in July 2009 for under $250. Not the regular price, but I used a sale code I found on Flyertalk. Always worth looking around for advice - as you are doing - you never know what you'll find!

And give you joy of your trip. I had a fabulous time there in April. March of Dimes, Coney Island, High Line, Chelsea Market, Times Square. It was the first time I've been to NYC without taking the Staten Island Ferry, one of the world's great harbour cruises. Get some good walking shoes, learn how to use the subway and you'll have a blast!

Will be in NYC next week. Booked at Affinia Manhattan which is on 31st and 7th (opposite Penn Station). Has good reports - will let you know.

I was told about this place for budget accom : Hotel Beacon 2130 Broadway at 75th street.

I am also looking in May '14.

My last three stays have been around midtown area. Recommend one of the Apple Core hotels:

Not deluxe but good facilities, with breakfast, wi-fi, convenience of location.

Sometimes the New Yorker (a Ramada property) can have some good deals. Sign up to their newsletter. I've stayed there in the past. Nice enough rooms - good 34th Street location for your first sightseeing trip to NYC. I now choose to stay well away from Midtown - but that's because I rarely do sightseeing when I am in NYC these days....mostly just eating and drinking so choose to stay LES or SoHo.

Doing research for a 5 night stay over x-mas.....will be interesting to see how you go.

This stay is also over Xmas. I'm moving over to Doubletree Times Square for New Year.
I was thinking of booking a sublet on airbnb instead until I saw that room rate at Conrad (we have two rooms for 6 of us).

We have 4+ weeks all up in LOTFAP.

8 days on the West Coast, NYC for 5, Washington for 4, then probably a road trip through the south ending up 12 days later in DFW.

Other than the flights & PH in Washington - nothing else is booked:shock:

Sounds like fun :D
We have 8 weeks from early Dec to end Jan.
Mostly everything booked except Boston, Washington, and our last stop Whistler.
