New York

The Conrad is a superb hotel. I stayed there in January at around $115 a night! It's about a 10 minute walk to the subway but once you get the hang of the express trains you can get most places fairly quickly.

That's a great rate. I will be in the city in Jan 2014 and while I know it's a cheap time for hotels in NYC, this is incredibly cheap.

How long are you going for ?
If say longer than 4-5 days I would consider an apartment.
More space and much cheaper and there are options for $200-250/night.
Have a look on tripadvisor.
Here is one example 67 reviews and 22 photos for AUGUST SPECIAL $229 NEW APARTMENT Times Square

I thought rentals less than 30 days duration were illegal in NYC. Well, Manhattan anyway. Not sure about the other boroughs.

Stayed several times at IC Barclay 111 E 48th St,
Last time in Jan was under $200
Lovely older style hotel in good location

They are although many people do it without a problem. There's risk involved.

And don't overlook somewhere like Secaucas New Jersey, I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn recently. It is only a short bus ride to the Port Authority terminal.

Sounds like fun :D
We have 8 weeks from early Dec to end Jan.
Mostly everything booked except Boston, Washington, and our last stop Whistler.

8 weeks is always better than 4!

Enjoy the hols & keep warm.
