Hi

A friend is looking for nice Campervan options in New Zealand. For a honeymoon of sorts, so no Wicked vans (lol)

Does anyone have any experience with any upmarket companies that offer newish motorhomes? Price not such a factor.

Thanks heaps,

I don't have any first hand experience with campervans in New Zealand. But from what I know the two big brands in NZ are Kea and Maui. They seem to be quite popular with rich older tourists from Europe. Summer is the peak season and often they can be full booked out. Winter is the off peak season and you can usually get quite good discounts.

I have had experience with Kea and Pacific Horizon motorhomes in the last couple of years. I hired a 6 berth from both for a 2 week trip of the north and south islands and would highly recommend both. Kea seems to have a higher standard of inclusions and their vehicles get turned over very regularly so they are always relatively new and in excellent condition. Pacific Horizon, you can pay a little extra for a premium vehicle which guarantees a less than 1 year old (i think) vehicle, but certainly nothing wrong with their fitout and inclusions. Personal choice but I found the manual Fuso vehicle of Pacific Horizon better to drive than the automatic Ford of Kea. Both companies great to deal with and convenient locations close to most airports and would not hesitate to use either again.

Have a read of Rankers- I found it to be a very good NZ site for comparisons.
In 2009 and 2010 we used Gateway- Sth island first & the following year Nth Island. Great (very newish) vehicles and at the time had the biggest beds of all the motorhomes. Depending on time of year, separate heating of the living quarters is an important criteria. The shower area in all of them was too small for me to use but fine for Mrs RB. Toilet useful for nightime. Some spots the freecamping is not available unless the motorhome has a shower & loo. Your friends need to decide if they want to drive a manual or auto also.
