So after a major disruption & tragedy in our lives, I have simply been a lurker on this site. I have posted a few previous enquiries about New Zealand, the trip is booked to the south island in 6 weeks. We are taking our grandson, aged 11 with us for his first overseas trip, and his first flight(s). Our plans are;

Christchurch
Kaikoura
Nelson
Punakaiki
Franz Josef
Milford Sound
Te Anau
Wanaka
Mt Cook & surrounds
Queenstown
Dunedin
Christchurch

Will try and TR same.
that's a great itinerary and you will love all of the places. If you have time the drive out from Chch to Akaroa is well worth it and the grandson would most likely enjoy the Gondola ride to the top of the Port Hills in Chch as well as the Antarctic Centre just out of town. We lived in Chch for a year before the quakes and it's a different city now but still a great place to visit. Just make sure the passengers are not on the "death seat" side of your car if you decide to drive over the Port Hills in Chch. My wife made me drive around anticlockwise so she didn't have to see the big drops on her side!

We are actually staying at Milford Sound, bit exy but will be worth it. Thanks for the other tips as well.
You will love it there and join the select few who overnight there. Milford is one of the wettest places in NZ but don't let that deter you as when it rains you are greeted by magnificent waterfalls running off the huge mountains that surround the sound.

Just make sure you have Aerogard! The sandflies down there are vicious little things!
