What do you suppose the timing should be between close of Explorers (just burned both my wife and my $400 credit on tickets AKL-SYD on EK in J!) and opening on the next credit card?

For me this would really come down to your credit worthiness more than anything else. If you have a good income I wouldn't worry about waiting too long.
