Qantas today announced that Next Generation Check-in technology has started rolling out across its regional network.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said this was a significant milestone in the program and regional Australia.

"Next Generation Check-in provides our customers with a smarter, faster check-in experience and we're excited to be delivering this technology for customers in our regional ports," said Mr Joyce

There are obviously other considerations, but the current time taken to check-in/bag drop at PQQ is pretty minor.

Albury, Rockhampton, Karratha, Broome, Coffs Harbour and Mackay are the first ports to benefit from the introduction of Q Card Reader technology, and will be shortly followed by Emerald, Hobart, Kalgoorlie, Port Hedland and Port Macquarie.
Hooray, finally ABX gets some good news.
Thanks QF.
Cheers

I don't see great advantages to rolling out NGCI in smaller regional ports, like ABX, ROK and CFS, except purely for familiarity / consistency. Even NZ didn't roll out its new self check-in on all ports (only AKL, WLG and CHC; it should be noted that NZ's self check-in uses standard paper tags).

The problem with putting NGCI in say KTA to speed up check-in is that they probably won't:
  • Have enough injectors to process people faster than that if they had standard counters
  • Make injectors fast enough so that people so that, again, it'll be faster than if they had standard counters
Not to mention if whether QF have really considered how durable and resilient they need to make all the controls (especially touch screens) in such a location due to the travelling demographic.

CNS and DRW people must be seeing red (no pun intended). Since when were they supposed to be treated as "regional" areas.

Not sure if anyone has seen this yet:

Will be interesting to see NCGI at some of the regional ports. Personally I've never had any problems with long wait times at regional airports. However I'm wondering with these smaller airports if it means they'll be removing staff. For PPQ example has two staff. Are they going to be putting in check-in kiosks as well as checkin poles?

Wonder how much of the full NCGI experience it will be.....

I don’t think staff are being removed, in fact more staff may be required to be behind the desks and on the floor ready to assist.

I note Longreach has been forgotten! :(

I'm not sure about the other "regional" ports but I can see KTA and PHE being beneficial as a lot of the FIFOs and therefore the majority of the traffic to these ports will have enough status to give them Q cards and Q tags, which would save time, labour there and in PER, and bring consistency.

Since when isn't CNS a regional area

DRW too small and too remote but still a capital. And don't start on me as a love DRW and even have family and friends living there.

now this is good news, just checked the list and mackay is one of the airports to be completed so WOO HOO :D - lost my QC card and they reissued with a funny looking q in the top right hand corner :D

Has anyone noticed the NCGI Rollout page has updated?

Next Generation Check-in rollout schedule

It now says BNE is live in April, Albury, Broome, Coffs Harbour, Emerald, Hobart, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Mackay Port Hedland, Port Macquarie, Rockhampton already have Q Card Readers. And T2 isn't getting Q Card readers at all....

Interesting how this 'Partial NCGI' concept will look..

I get a bit confused with partial...

I now use my FF card as my boarding pass in all airports : check in online (don't print out) then just use my card at the gate. This isn't technically part of NGCI right?

Noticed the Q card reader at ROK this week
When I was at ROK on Wed, the check-in chap at QF said they weren't getting bag drop so the NGCI is still not fully utilised.
I recall a similar statement at CNS not so long ago.

So...it seems as though T2 won't be getting Q Card readers despite essentiallly being a QantasLink Hub? Yet NTL is getting Bag Tag functionality despite QF practically having left its operations to JQ? Seems a bit strange

A random thought...I am yet to use a regional QP, however, are they staffed? If not, could the Q card be used for access to the QP, in a similar manner to the Q Card check in (I have no idea if this is already in use, just a thought I had, especially if th eold keypad system is in use)

The disease spreads

Depending on your perspective this is either the disease or the cure ;)

This is what I do and I interpret that as NGCI given the use of the card at the gate.

Word going around that all QF operations may head to T3 shortly.

So will the T2 QP close?
No effect on me at Regional ports as generally i am travelling with my Aadvantage number in the booking.
As to regional QPs that i have been to-not staffed.Checkin agents push the secret button to let you in.

At CFS, the NGCI will give you your boarding "receipt", but you still need to go to the desk to get the code to the lounge, as the keypad is on the council's system, not on QL's.
