Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Hoddles Creek 1er Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2015
IMG_4519.jpg
Ruby red with a slight unfiltered cloudiness. Floral nose. A little underwhelming on the palate initially as was a tad too cold. Subtle strawberry and blueberry palate. Very restrained and elegant. No forest floor earthiness. Much better day 2, less acidity. Seamless oak spice and fruit. One to cellar.

Purely my own tastes of course QF WP but the Grey would be on it's way down after two hours

I couldn't read the year, but it looked like a 2010 to me. In which case, I'd say that it'd probably be great on day 2 or day 3 (if kept in a nice cold fridge during the day). Two hours, and it'd still be a baby IMHO.

The 1996 Tahbilk Shiraz I had the other day only continued to develop (I originally wrote "got better", but I guess that's a personal preference) over 24-36 hours (again, kept nice and cold during the day).

It's one thing to say that one prefers the taste of young, fruit-forward style wine, over evolved/aged characteristics. However, it's another to say that the wine is going downhill - which means it's become over-oxidised or lost its flavours - a clear fault in the wine.

AC, correct it was the 2010. Given the second glass of each bottle was better than the first even after decent time for decant, I agree it might have been interesting to try and retain some to drink on Day 2. Alas, I was driving on Day 2 so was out of the question...

Email from AFF'er joelen

Today was sorting out the wine day. Mr joelen discovered these hidden in boxes and as you can see the levels are variable, so not sure of quality. He used to work for Orlando.

I think I need to get my neck measurer out to take with me (given to me by Penfolds Peter Gago at a previous Penfolds re-corking clinic). What is the considered opinion here with this limited information? Think we might have to open a couple just to see whether they survived...

Only check it, because it's the only one you think is still okay AC? The 2nd '89 in the picture and the '86 are looking a bit too low for my liking, but the proof will be in the tasting?

Have to scroll to find the older vintages, and 1996 was the first cab "off the rank" :)

Also, as the wines get older, there tends to be fewer (or no) reviews. Presumably the a lot of ratings websites didn't exist when the majority of those vintages were drunk. Summary of the Jacaranda from CT

True, that leaves them with the 89 with the higher level. Lets hope all of them have sufficient provenance. They advised local Indian offers $10 corkage per bottle so we'd better take a couple...

Nice wines. Visited them 2 years ago. Interesting vineyards and impressive cellar tasting complex. Try the 2011 if you can find them.

Very interesting wine from Pyramid Valley. Yes it is that colour. Unfilterd pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris mix. Very astringent on opening. Needs time to open up.

QF upped the ante with this ripper MR chardy.

Would have polished off the bottle but didn't want to keep St Henry waiting too long ;)

Mr jojen decided to try the oldest, the 1986 and the 1989 with the lowest level. Both poured down the sink as had oxidised due to old corks. Probably also due to not being stored under " ideal" conditions for the last 20 years.
Hopefully the remaining 3 will be drinkable, but will have backup in case !!

Last Christmas (I forget what I drank),
twas not a great start, but I've since taken more care
so this year, I wrote down some notes
of the 2 reds that I hoped were special (special)......musical-notes.jpg

Interesting comparison of my favourite style (Bordeaux), 2011's from MR and NZ.

Woodlands Cabernet Merlot
Medium garnet, forward fruit of berries and olives. Tannins are evident but seem balanced. Felt lacked a little complexity. Drank over 5-6 hrs so should have opened up. Good if not great. Had one before and was more impressed last time.

Te Mata Coleraine
Medium ruby, a bit dusty and dried initially. After about two hrs a bit more fruit but still rather green leaf and herbal (bay leaves and eucalyptus). Very dry. Fruit struggling to deliver. Day 2: wine still failed to open up. Dry and lacked fruit flavour, for the money this one was a disappointment (and I still have 3 bottles!).

Trying to decide between 2011 Rifle Range and 2007 Balnaves the tally for tonight. Any thoughts in terms of drinking windows?
