Been trying for months to book SYD/LAX/SYD for months in J for 2 of us and approx a week or so away, tried up to October 2011, found a couple over but no J back, called QFF still no luck, their answer was yes not enough seats due to more people joining!.
Going to Asia instead using points on CX in J. I'm only bronze, in Q club have stacks of points (purchases). Its very annoying they have so few J seats to/from the US. I'm wondering now if I should join some other FF program.

Yes Limewood I often come home thru SIN on SQ J and it costs about 100k-120k points depending on Saver or Standard availability (plus higher booking fees).
If you get into both schemes you go out QF and back SQ.
Others say Premium Economy on VA is ok but I have not tried it.
I will do about 14 J or F bookings for my family in 2011 to LAX so I had to get both Frequent Flyer schemes running.

Velocity allow you to book any seat if one is available. I'd like to see them add in the ability to upgrade using points.

It looks like you need about 188000 points for a J seat return flight.

our redemption promise. If there’s a seat available any V Australia flight, you can redeem Velocity Points to secure your place on board! Velocity Points can also be redeemed for limited release Reward Seats and on Redemption Sales.

QF is brilliant for J travel on points for us especially to SYD and MEL from PER and still ok to get you J to LAX.

Did you consider the new DFW flights, there was plenty of U this week after the announcement of this new service.

IIRC, I have seen quite a few LAX-BNE J award seats. Maybe try the award booking engine using the multi sector option and look at LAX-BNE and then BNE-SYD.

Getting 2 out of Oz in J may require you to look at BNE and MEL as well as SYD to improve your opportunities.
J out of BNE used to use some pretty old 747's but I am confident that QF found some "newer" planes for this route to LAX.
Flying to DFW is a pretty good option if you are heading to the east coast of America.
