They do that if you haven't boarded. MrP received a text when in the queue waiting to board as did the guy behind him.

I got a phone call a few weeks ago!!

I'd checked in but actually decided to not fly that day but forgot to cancel my ticket, lovely gate agent called to ask 'if I was alright since you haven't arrived'!!

Felt bad and told her the plane was fine to leave without me!!

I was stuck in traffic on the way to MEL (terrible in the morning since the roadworks started). My flight was scheduled do depart at 7.30am. Got a call from QF at 7.25 asking me if I would be kind enough to join them at the gate. I apologized and said I'm on my way. Finally arrived at 7.45 to find everyone waiting just for me.
Felt so grateful and embarrassed at the same time...
