Hello Folks,

Just booked some time at the Millennium BKK and got this:

I normally ignore the Nor1 upgrade thing as it confuses me in relation to what I can expect to get for 'free' as part of the HH Gold program. But this one got my attention ... this looks to me like a request for the standard (hoped for) room upgrade as I originally booked a Deluxe Plus which is just below the first of the Executive offerings.

The 1000THB saving is the money I'd save by not having to book the Executive room but getting it as an elite benefit. Notice also that it says "Hilton HHonors - Upgrade".

Has this been the case for ages but I've just not been paying attention???

interesting, never seen it before either.

It's been the same for all my overseas bookings for next year also that I've made in the last couple of days. Different properties may still charge a small surplus (for ex, I didn't get the free option at Venice Stucky it was an extra 25 euro, but did get no cost for Sorrento, Athens, Milan, and Singapore)

I have seen it may times - I don't tick any boxes as I am entitled to an Exec upgrade without needing to 'promote' Nor1.:-|

As serfty says, this is common. I ignore it - I've never taken up a NOR1 upgrade offer and still get the upgrades at checkin - often better than what is offered on NOR1.

Seen it many times too. If it's free I put in request, if not I'll leave it up to what's on offer at checkin as HH Gold.

Just made a booking in the USA and didn't see it!

Not all properties subscribe to the Nor1 service, nor, with those that do subscribe may it be available every day - that can depend upon current bookings and other facets.

Sorry should have been more clear!

I did receive an upgrade offer, but just the standard paid upgrade, and not the HHnonors mentioned upgrade as per the first post.

The only and only time I have selected paid upgrades, as a Diamond member, I was moved from a standard room to an accessible room! Yet there were higher level rooms available for that night....... So now I don't bother!

Re: Nor1 upgrade for no money??? Is the standard elite room 'upgrade'

I have seen that screen many times and usually just tick the first option as long it is free.

I have no idea what NOR1 is though but I am guessing that is what is offering the upgrades.

I see that in my forthcoming bookings in the UK and China, but not The USA and Australia.

The URL of the upgrades site includes "NOR1" so that's what people know the paid upgrade offers by.

Nor1 is the company name behind the technology, which is used by a few hotel chains now.

I considered Nor1 the thin end of the wedge ... but it has been around for at least 6 years.

See here from FT in 2008:

Nor1 is the Technology Leader in Upsell Solutions

It's a company that helps travel and hospitality companies monetize their inventory.

It will be marketed as a 'good deal' for you by providing 'more options'. In reality, it will limit elite ability to get anything more than the most minimal upgrade unless they pay for it.

In short, it's a disaster for elites if rolled out widely ... which I'm guessing is on the way. No more multi-class upgrades. Potentially less upgrades even at the most basic level.

Hilton San Francisco- New Upgrade policy? (Nor 1)

I made sure to notice this the other day when I made the 3 bookings required for the VS promotion.

Interesting that I was offered complimentary upgrade for both Millenium Hilton Bangkok bookings but nothing for Hilton Brisbane.

I must say, I'm still not completely clear on how such NOR1, or any NOR1 'upgrade' interacts with the expected elite upgrade. For example. I ticked the 'free' NOR1 upgrade to an executive room as per my OP, what does this actually mean? If this is successful does it represent my hoped for/expected status upgrade from a more basic room? Should I be expecting an upgrade on top of the NOR1 thing?

If not, then how should I modify my expectation of an upgrade if I ticked, and was successful, with a paid-for NOR1 upgrade? No elite upgrade in that case? Or am I paying for my elite upgrade?

I don't use any NOR1 upgrade offer, even the free ones, unless it's a top tier suite that I want for a discounted price.

Some properties in the Hilton chain will offer a NOR1 upgrade for cash, even if the member is entitled to it, such as a Diamond member offered a suite. Clearly this should be free. Most Hyatt properties ensure that their Diamond members NOR1 upgrades are free to the upgraded room type, but it's still inconsistent.

A front desk clerk once told me that asking for a cash upgrade at the desk is always cheaper than the NOR1 offer.
