Hi brains trust
Looking for options for MstrQS who is finishing his Aarhus exchange.

He wants to travel around Scandinavia from 14 June 2023 and back in Aarhus Around 1 July 2023

I suggested maybe a Norwegian Fjord cruise.
Maybe Aarhus-Stockholm by overnight train, a few days there, then hop over the Oslo----Bergen.

Last day would be ferry from Gothenburg across to the Jutland peninsula on 1 July

Any assistance appreciated thanks

Probably amongst the cheapest and best for a youngster would be Hurtigren. Not a luxurious cruise ship but the know Norway better than anyone else.
Hurtigruten had a monopoly on the route between Kirkenes and Bergen (with numerous stops along the way) but there's now a competitor in Havila which commenced sailings at the start of 2022 with a fleet of 4 brand new ships. They are partially electric. The two companies now share the route equally, sailing on alternate days with identical itineraries.

You can embark or disembark at multiple places down the coast depending on how long you want your trip to be. The full Kirkenes to Bergen (or reverse) trip takes 7 days but you can do as little as 1 day if you want.

In August last year we stayed in Tromso for a few days and sailed with Havila from there to Bergen over 4 days.
I think Havila wins easily over Hurtigruten. They are new to this passenger route but they have been in commercial shipping for many decades so they certainly don't lack experience.

The Havila cabins are very well appointed and have an excellent layout (much better than Hurtigruten's). Hurtigruten's boats are all 1980's / 1990's vintage and it shows, even though they have been refurbished over the last 10-15 years)
Havila's food & general service was excellent and I have no criticisms of their product at all.
For us Havila's the way to go.

Quickstatus, there are seasonal changes to the route so you should look closely at what places the cruises call at for the dates you want to travel. One significant change could be whether the boat travels up Geirangerfjord which is one of the most beautiful of the fjords.
Plus, the route NS is not identical to the one from Sth to North.

I think lack of time will be your biggest enemy. Norway has such amazing places to see that we hired a car in Bergen after our cruise and did a 9 day road trip up as far north as Andalsnes and then in a big loop south to Stavanger and then back to Bergen and also had 3 days in Oslo. All up we had 18 days in Norway and we kept on the move the whole time. We could have easily filled in another week there.

Thanks @drron and @vetrade.

Hurtigruten schedule and Havila schedule both fit but the former is coming in at $12K while Havila quoted $3k (AUD equivalent)
Maybe check you are "comparing apples with apples". That Hurtigruten price seems very high. Prices do vary significantly with the type of cabin and what meal package you select.
Comparing "like for like" Havila was about $1000 cheaper for our trip with full board.

Svalbard is great! However what about him doing a trip, where he will be with other the same age. I love Hurtigruten but it is not a young demographic.

There are a number of companies running hiking trips, kayaking, mtb etc in Scandinavia.

where he will be with other the same age
It's a last minute thing and I've been told the best way to see the Fjords is by cruise especially with limited time which is bookended by end of semester and travel back to AU. Hiking not on the menu nor does he have the gear. MstrQS is more of an intellectual type so a Fjord cruise would fit him perfectly.

Last trip he did in Easter during Uni break was by himself. 8 days by night train into southern Europe. A new city every morning, slept on train, showered at train stations 🤣

Sorry i meant Havila
Yes, you can book excursions later with Havila but, comparing notes with a couple on our cruise who did do an excursion, it may not be worth bothering. While we sat back in comfort on the boat admiring the changing scenery, they spent most of their time on a bus going to and from the excursion. The excursions available down the Norwegian coast are not in the same league as what you see on TV for ships like the Scenic Eclipse!

If you can't add something online, you can always email or call them. I had trouble with my 28 Degree Card being accepted online so I ended up calling them a couple of times and the woman I spoke to was exceptionally accommodating and efficient, so that's always an option.

We didn't reckon the drinks packages were very good value and even though we like a wine or two, we honestly didn't miss not having any during the cruise.
We just bought some snacks and our fave lollies and that sufficed for us.
