Obtaining a visa for Chile

I had to apply for another visa for Chile for 2025. After the Melbourne fiasco, this time I applied through Sydney. What a difference!

I made the application on October 10th. On October 29th I received the email advising application is successful and use (this reference) for payment. Allow 5 days for processing.

As I will not be in Chilean ports until February 10th - 24th, I will pay on December 12th. I rang the Consulate today and they do not close down over Christmas. :)

Good to see that they don't take notice of their direction to apply for a visa in a certain city (eg Melbourne).

They really need to ditch this visa. I understand the reciprocity politics but jeez it's annoying enough to turn some people off going there. We've been lucky and avoided paying on both our trips to Chile. Last one in 2017 we flew in from Tahiti to Easter island and then domestic into SCL. Time before that we drove in from Ushuaia. Guess with the evisa there's no avoiding it.

Until Australia remove the need for a full visa for Chileans, the reverse won’t be removed for Australians.

There’s something more to it than just ‘reciprocity’ now. The current “visa” requirement for Oz citizens is quite unique and verging on punitive punishment.

Successive Oz governments haven’t managed to come up with something acceptable to all…. Yet, NZ, UK, Canada and the USA (along with many others) have.

I'm visiting South America in Feb/March next year and will be transiting through SCL for 4 hours when i arrive, not leaving the airport. Under 8 hours so no visa required.

Then on my way home I'm "transiting" at SCL with 71:10 between my arrival and departure times. (arrive at 2pm thursday, depart at 1:10pm sunday) I'll be leaving the airport and visiting the city this time.

I have a hotel booking, all my flights etc. Will the fee free 3 day transit visa be fine for this or should I pay up for the 90 day visa to avoid any headaches?

It sounds like you are just right for the 72 hour no-charge transit visa.
