Odd Airports Around the World

You should see some of the remote runways we land on in the NT!

Once we were landing on a very short looking strip. Last time we'd been there we flew in in a smaller twin engine cessna and the pilot told us they really had to work hard to pull the bigger metroliners up before running off the runway.

I remembered the pilot saying that, as we were coming into land... in a metroliner

Pulled up with about 20m to go i think....

St Maarten (Princess Juliana International) is incredible. We spent 3 days there back in January - and half the time was spent just sitting on the beach watching planes and taking photos. Sometime I will actually get around to posting some on here!

So want to go there!

I spent a week on the military base in Gib many years ago - very very interesting place. Even had a look in an old Canberra and a super secret Hercules...

Macau can be disconcerting at first if you aren't in the window seat - all you see is water both sides and that runway?

A little too narrow for my taste, but done it several times and am back again next week - pity none of the flights are OW or *A, could use the SCs and FF points.

If I could turn back time, then the old Kaitak airport is a must for visit.

Quite like SNA (Santa Ana, Orange Co) a very steep take off and sharp turn due to local residents and noise abatement issues.

Oh thank God we can't... I remember flying there back in mid 90s as a wide-eyed young'un off to study in China.... for someone who has never really liked flying - and particularly banking on way to an airport: Kai Tak was horrible. I just was so thankful on the way out - I was over 18 and drank myself stupid during taxiing ;)

Good times good times...

Fane in PNG a bit like Kai Tak. Take off over a deep valley (drops away from the end of the runway) and make a sharp right turn, because at the opposite side of the narrow valley is a mountain. Lots of others like that.

Cheers skip

Done Gib - even walked! across the runway.
Have previously flown into Kai Tak.

Would love to do St Maarten

Odd airports/strips I have flown in no particular order

YTMO - F100 on a short strip no reverse thrust just bags of brakes and flaps
WUG - Single engine Cessna from Lae in the 80's, grass strip uphill land and downhill takeoff

Ah, brought up this thread again .... Just watched the video, bringing me fond memories of me looking at all those planes passing over my house as per the later part of the video. Yes it was that close for a plane to fly over every few minutes in peak times.

Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport (1925 - 1998)
