I've completed OLCI (computer) for a QFd sector this arvo. Do I need to actually print out the document, or will scanning my PS card at the gate suffice?

If you have the barcode scanning your card will work. I always do OLCI and never bother to print out the BP, just scanning my card instead.

Good to know - hadn't even thought to try that. Great that QF designed a system that allows you to use the different methods.

No worries. I am assuming the silver card has the same features as a platinum one. Seems to be a safe assumption

What happens if I am a QF bronze? If I don't print out BP do I just get one from check in?

I almost always OLCI, on arrival at the airport I then tell them I've checked in but don't have a boarding pass. As QF are not Ryanair they happily print me out a boarding pass and off I go.

I personally still like the piece of cardboard in my pocket, I've done the NGCI thing once and I didn't like not having something written down with my flight times that I could just check.

My son's bronze card has the bar code on the back similar to a platinum card so I assume that works the same.

Tangential to the topic.

Couple of years ago my consultancy applied for a fed Govt / AusTrade grant to establish o/s business. We had done that quite successfully already but AusTrade was horrified that we hadn't gone through them and sort of insisted we apply for some re-imbursement (who were we to argue ;) ). A significant part of the assistance $s was for overseas travel. From memory, there were 2 ways we could 'prove' our travel for the purposes of the grant:

One was some form of letter or statement from the airlines, the other way was to produce boarding passes. Fortunately we had kept them - I throw mine into a drawer in case I need to claim for points, insurance etc later; I never seem to clean the drawer out.

So, 2 years after their use, those boarding passes came to life and were very valuable!

Moral of the story: Get hardcopy BPs and keep 'em. You never know ...

Technically you do get a boarding pass even when you use your FF card to board.

A paper boarding pass gets printed at the gate upon the successful scanning of your FF card.

That's right. Regardless of what they scan at the gate everyone gets a printed boarding pass.

I have once done OLCI under my WP profile, switched to my AA number at the J lounge who printed me a BP with my AA number, then accidentally used my WP card to board. The docket came out with just a OW logo and nothing mentioning WP. The flight still credited to AA but it was a bit of an :o moment after I realised that I had the BP with my AA number in my pocket.

Perhaps also worth noting the barcode is the same for life, so if you drop down a level but still want to use your Gold card, while you can't get in the lounge, you can still swipe it at the gate. My sister is a QP NB and uses her PS card to board etc.

I've been enjoying the mobile check-in and Passbook combination via iOS... I always used to print the BP 24 hrs beforehand, but now I just do the advanced seat selection when booking and again at T-80, and then generally check-in on the cab ride to the airport! :) Bag-drop is nice and easy with Passbook or the FF card as well. The virtual BPs store in your phone with Passbook, and you can delete as you wish after miles post, etc. That said... I think I will need to break preference in a couple of weeks when I fly SYD-BNE-SIN and then connect on a separate PNR to MH for SIN-KUL-BLR. This is one for the Premium Desk I expect!

I agree...for those with an iOS device, Passbook is a great way to manage check in and boarding pass. Qantas have done a good job with their app, though the last step needing to jump back to Safari is a bit annoying. Wish they could fully integrate it into the app.

AFAIK the card has to have the chip in it to generate the docket at the gate. Can you use your son as a guinea pig next time Simon & let us know for sure?

You must have a paper copy of your b/pass if you don't have ff card with the chip. The card with the chip will generate the docket that prints your name & seat number on it same as the 2D barcode when you do mobile checkin.

If you only have the OLCI b/pass on your ipad & scan that at the gate, it will board you but won't generate a docket so eg if you are NB ask the gate agent to reprint your b/pass to show the CSM when you board the a/c.

OK, as a relatively new - and not entirely converted - iPad user, can you mention how do I get the Passbook, please? Couldn't see anything re 'Passbook' in the Application Store; under Qantas I see some iPhone Applications, but none for iPad. You mentioned "iOS" - so something should be there across the platforms?
