I always thought the fare had an influence, but I was told differently by someone at Qantas - they maintain is CL Pref, then WP pref etc, but sometimes it seems a bit strange.

I always thought the same, until recent times - my last 5 return flights have been red e-deals, and I've had awesome seats every time.

For Oz Domestic, I rarely travel on anything else but red e-deals.

Well even with my new Silver membership I didn't get a much better seating allocation on my flight from PER-MEL and return. Got the window but I asked for Forward Window in my preferences. I will still allocated to 53A on a 747 and towards the back on a 767. Seemed a little weird as there were seats empty in front of me, I OLCI and was Seq # 6, and there were peopele on the flight who didn't look to be regular travellers by any means. Will see how I go this week when I do the trip again.

Don't by fooled by what someone looks like ;)

My seat allocation doesn't seem to change whether I am on a red e-deals or more flexible fares.

True. Next time you are looking at the guy in the bright yellow Hi-Vis shirt sitting in row 7 and thinking how did he get a seat there, remember that it may well be me :)

My experience as well. Since I got SG, I've had nothing below 6 on a 737 and snagged 4A/C on my last return from MEL. I suspect that being in ADL might have something to do with it, seems our flights aren't as packed as others.

As an aside, I flew a 734 back from MEL last week and I realized rows 4-7 are the convertable biz rows. Other times on those I've always been down the back. My other 'up-fronts' have been on 738, which are normal econ seats.
So not only did I get up the front on a red-e, but we got about 7-8 cms extra leg room and cup holders in the armrests. In future, I'm looking for flights with these babies as my first preference.

OLCI earlier today, Seq 2. and got 6A.. have had a look again, and now snagged 4C

Working in IT and looking after a number of mining clients, I appreciate that there are a lot of people who may not appear to be frequent flyers (ie rough looking, high vis clothes etc) but probably do a heap more than me. I guess it just seems weird that I could'nt get any closer to the front than 52 on 747.

Oh well, thankfully it won't be too much longer before I get a higher status. Thanks to the double status credits offer (originally to help me get to Silver) I made silver, and in a week and a half from now (thanks to 4 flights in a week) I will become a new Gold Member. Hopefully this will get me closer to the front :)
