Ay caramba - you're pulling out? What a shame - the cookie crumbles in cruel ways sometimes.

Hmm

I'd take it but I'm both strapped for funds and I won't be able to anyway - I'm not in SYD on St Valentine's Day (well, I am, but I'm (hopefully) having lunch somewhere else).

I'd be very tempted if I were to be in Sydney that day, but perhaps St V. day is not the best day to be going there!

That's where you've all lost me. This place you need to book 2-3+ months in advance, so it's always busy. How would V day be any busier/different?

Ratio of couples to larger groups would be different!

So, 26 posts later and nothing but useless banter

Looks like I'll be cancelling it!

The thread is not completely useless,

E-bay might be worth a shot; really there must be someone in Sydney that would love the reservation for 14-Feb.

Sad that you have to cancel it though.

We all better pray that anat0l SCs come through. "where is the praying smiley when you need it"

Not useless - I have a longer list of places on my todo list now. Always interesting to hear peoples takes on restaurants as well :) In any case it has strengthened my resolve to get to Tets someday!

Yeah you have lots of small groups of people talking quietly as opposed to a few large loud groups at birthday parties and the like ... I know which I would prefer...

That was my thoughts too, simongr... again, confused by everyone else

So you've done the Fat Duck then, or not on the list?

We considered doing it when we were in the UK last but didnt get chance - I just completely missed it in my list above due it being 5AM when I posted the list ;)

Hmmm. Any restaurant with main meals priced over $30 is way overpriced.

I have read through this thread a couple of times now and I have not heard of any of the restaurants recommended here and I have lived in Sydney for over 36 years now.

That's why.

$30 isn't really that much these days for a mains. Low-mid 30's is typical at a lot of places after the food inflation of the last year or so.

Yes but are food prices likely to remain inflated during the global financial crisis? Me thinks that some restaurants are going to have a hard time, possibly close, and it will not be the Yeeros shop around the corner....

I complain if I have to spend more than $30 to feed my entire tribe! Its not so easy now with two teenage boys to include in the process.

You probably spend less now going out for meals than before you had kids :)

Macca's is cheaper than some dining establshments that kids don't appreciate

Nahh, never been a big one for "fine dining".

Indeed. Take them to a "nice" restaurant and they ask for the hamburger option anyway!

We make the most of deals like Hungry Jacks "family meal deal" and supplement with an extra burger or two as needed. Or Subway's buy 3 footlongs and get a 4th free. Some Subways also have a family deal which can be good value. Maccas generally don't have family deals, so can work out more expensive overall. $22.00 bought us 4 pizzas last night .

Just a point of note:

Fat Duck - Bray, England
French Laundry - California
El Bulli - Spain

;)
