Onboard Greetings

Under what circumstances do/don't you like onboard greetings by the manager?

Personally speaking, I enjoy a greeting on flights over 2 hours where I'm not traveling in the highest cabin available.

I find it an embarrassment when I am flying economy and some one comes down to greet me

I can take or leave the greeting as such, but I find a well delivered one can set the tone for the rest of the flight.

My wife and I are both WP. Wife feels special with greeting...

My son well traveled has many points with Singapore & Qantas but no status always travels J on points.
His version of Status for recognition "give them a $50 tip to give a greeting" that's very economical compared to the thousands $ spent maintaining WP

I have the opposite feeling. On long haul I'm pretty much always flying Y, but I've been able to retain SG forever by virtue of giving QF the business. So it's nice to see that they value something about the transaction; there will always be others in the cabin who are being given the same attention, and I'm not fussed if the CSM checks the sheet to get my name right.

But the greeting has a practical aspect. I find that asking nicely at greeting time often gets me a larger blanket and a pair of NC headphones. And occasionally, I can see that the early interaction leads to a better scotch, or extra chockies. Nothing that would draw attention from people around me (which I don't seek), but nice touches from the crew and makes long haul that tiny bit much nicer. And these days EVERY bit helps.

It's a nice touch. I only fly VA domestically and always expect (but not always receive) the greeting. Will I loose sleep if they stop doing it? No...
Whether it is from the heart or just part of the job description is irrelevant to me. Does QF, TT and JQ offer a similar greeting to VA? (I haven't flown QF, JQ or TT domestically for years.) Internationally NZ does the best job I have found at greetings.

Only had two flights as a WP so far. No special WP greeting. Both were coast to coast flights. Even as a PS though, I still received the "welcome back Mr Daver6" when boarding though.

I like on QR in J how the cabin crew who will be looking after your area will come introduce themselves to you prior to take off. The offer to show you how all the gadgetry works is a nice touch too. Never had anything like that on QF in J.

What status are you? I have never received or expected a greeting from the CSM on the triangle as a WP after seated. There must be 20 WPs on each flight so I never expect it.

As for intl, I am 6/6 on HKG, 1/1 on LAX and 0/4 on DPS intl flights in the Y cabin.

WP with VA... I tend to only fly SYD-OOL (and rarely SYD-ADL) domestically. Most of my flights are international.

Although a little OT, I was impressed with the check in lady at Sydney the other day. ( I am usually only HLO) I had my MIL with me as she was flying back to ADL and I was going to OOL. We had booked a wheel chair for my MIL and the check in lady was very friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for her. She even prioritised her baggage and moved her from 22A to 4F without asking. (my MIL is Red)

I feel weird when I get half the crew introducing themselves to me in the forward cabin, especially in F. My feeling is if you're not going to be the FA attending me the majority of the flight, then I don't really need you to say HI to me.

Flights under say 4 hours then not necessary but maybe an acknowledgement during boarding when the staff are checking your boarding pass.
I remember getting a hello on a flight ex London a few years ago when flying Y, it was a nice touch.

I find the greetings pointless. Occasionally the CSM will have a lengthy chat, which is fine, but the standard "Hello (name), I'm your Customer Service Manager and I'd like to welcome you back and thank you for flying with us again" is just time-wasting that I'd rather not remove my headphones for!

CX is the funny one to me. I have been greeted by three different crew members on one flight and they appeared to have different colour uniforms. In each case I was asked if there was anything I needed. Fortunately I didn't need anything because they had turned a fled before I could get a word out. To be honest I have no idea what I would want.

I get greeted approximately 1 in 3 flights with BA. The best was on a back to back to BGO where the Purser remembered me from a previous BTB and greeted me with the line. "If I remember correctly you probably will skip the meal going up and dine with us on the return Mr Hancock"

I'm no great fan of the greeting particularly when I am sitting watching the CSM stopping to review his/her iPad next to my seat beforehand.

Nothing on domestic flights, not even on a SYD>LAX flight but on our last VA LAX>SYD flight the cabin manager after boarding and before landing visited every WP pax to thank them personally for blah blah blah - poor woman, no idea how she managed to do it for so many pax as the chat to each person took a few mins each.

I was SG and didnt rate but hubby was WP at the time and got the entire spiel. Twice.

I think greetings for elites are a nice way to make them feel valued. I usually smile, thank them, accept an express card and try not to be too demanding - and if international, ask for an amenities kit/PJs.

I do the same. Travelled on EK in Y recently and greeting was accorded to both my partner and I (she had no status), no greeting when we were on QF. I don't personally mind either way, but it is a nice touch - the missus certainly felt valued.

From my experience, EK does the same consistently and EY sometimes as well.

QF really does need to up their game in my opinion.

I was on EK flight SIN-BNE yesterday. Intetesting to receive greeting half way through after cabin lights had been dimmed. Thanked for loyalty and given express arrivals. I was in front mini cabin in economy. Saw a few others getting the greeting.

On a recent BA flight in Y from LHR to BLQ the CSM came to my exit row seat after take off, greeted me as a WP and asked if I wanted something from the bar. I couldn't believe it considering that BA is somehow trying to beat Ryanair at being a LCC and that now BA is charging for everything in Y even tea and water. Unfortunately, this was a one-off as no CSM greeting on my other 5 short haul BA flights in the same trip.

I don’t often fly in Y except Domestic. I like the greeting upon Boarding, and I like it when the Captain comes around the F Cabin.
Any other time is a bit pointless unless it’s handing out Express cards etc.

Personally I don't mind the greetings but on domestic flights when the FA's say welcome back after I have started walking away or when they read my BP to get my name and it goes something like "Welcome back..... err Mr. Logan 4A window seat on the right" it seems a little awkward.

Talking about greetings this reminds me of a FA at the gate who when I was walking down the priority line they uttered something along the lines of the general boarding lane is on the other side (indicating towards the other lane) I just replied with a thanks and continued toward them, this was just as the flight was called and I was the first person at the gate even if I wasn't entitled to PB it would have made no difference as no one else was there yet, It kind of left me a little shocked that without any checking they judged a book by its cover and didn't expect someone my age to have status or to be flying in a premium cabin. This was at CNS mid Jan this year.

I had similar by Air NZ many years ago as a young teenager at BNE Int when I rocked up to the J check-in desks that were empty, besides a massive Y-line and was told I was in the wrong line. Will always remain my most loved DYKWIA moment when I flashed my (at the time) Star Gold card back at them.

Back on topic slightly, recently flying the (now) defunct airline Air Berlin I had booked an award flight intra-Europe but wasn't able to do so in Business, so was in the very front row of Y. Being savvy I had checked the seat map just prior to boarding and saw there were to be no J passengers on the flight so when I got to my seat and found no space above my head, chose to use their lockers, and was promptly barked at by the CSM. I imagine it was hard for him later in the flight to welcome (only) me as the highest-tiered member onboard and offer to make my flight more enjoyable.

I don't make it a habit to use the space I haven't paid for, however in that circumstance I knew it wouldn't be used. Still should probably not get complacent again, but it did make for an interesting onboard greeting.

I am QF SG and flew EK a fair bit in Y for work last year and it was always nice to get the welcome. It was even more surprising when on a route which wasn't a QF codeshare.

It's only a little thing but it certainly made me feel more welcome than I am made to feel on Qantas.

Well finally on my 8th sector as a WP I received my first special on-board greeting about 45 minutes from landing on a 5 hour flight.
