Miss Mandja (23yo) has booked a one way flight to japan to study and wants to return to MEL between 12 and 20 jan 2016. "Best" price for the one way is on Jetstar for $700 in Y!

Surely we can do better? Either in cash or using points. I have about 100,000 points in each of QF and Virgin diligently saved over the years, plus another large bundle in SQ Krisflyer. Also I recently purchased 100,000 on AA

i have no problem with her going on Y but not at $700 in Y on Jetstar

Ideas?

Update

seems that the ticket needs to be flexible dated , hence the $700
Still seems too many $ to me !

If that's $700 for the direct NRT-MEL flight (the only direct flight from anywhere in Japan to MEL), it doesn't seem all that unreasonable to me at all.

Doesn't seem that bad. What are you expecting? It's winter and ski season. Holiday time, school holidays.

Especially for flexible fares. I doubt many award seats are still available.

On the Jetstar main page there is an add saying "something big is coming soon" for Japan,
might pay to wait a few days and sign up to their jetmail also just in case a sale pops up soon

just had a bit of a play and flying via cns works out a bit cheaper

After the 16th or 17th, the shoulder season fares on QF kick in and are in the mid-$AU700s
The order of the remaining OW options for one way cost is CX,MH,JL

My choice would be QF in this case. Actually surprising since CX usually has better one way fares.
Still waiting for UL to schedule MEL flights

Happy wandering

Do you mean JL or is this another topic?

No I meant Sri Lankan. Rumors persist that they will start flights to Australia. And they are relatively inexpensive.
Presently they code share with either MH or QF(exSIN) into Australia. Even with no through ticketing available on-line, their one way fare (this is 2 separate tickets with a LARGE detour) for Jan 2016 comes in less than JL.

My quick look also had some QF one-way fares only about $100 more than the JQ fares - so once you add all the fees and bundles etc then QF via BNE in Y class is a better use of your money than the current JQ fares. Going to the QF.jp web site I can see one-way QF fares via BNE from 59200Yen (converts to AUD$680-ish?) so booking in Japan (or on a Japanese web site) may be a little cheaper?

Also noted that JQ fares going via CNS or OOL sometimes brought the price down a bit, but not always. Don't forget the inconvenienrce of transferring International->Domestic and changing planes may make this unattractive for your daughter. If she's brave you could put her on Thai Airways and get the Thai A380 to Bangkok and then the B777 direct to MEL - its a 1.5hour connection in BKK and I can't say how easy/horrible an International transit is in BKK or not as it been a few years since I have been there.

Just saw an ad for JQ to Japan where the return fare is free when you purchase selected starter fares.

Need to book by 23 Sep.

Won't be any use for the daughter of the OP however.
