One-way MEL-HKG, and excess luggage too

I'll be re-locating to HKG and want to take a few extra pieces of checked luggage. Any strategies for one-way flights other than use miles/points or almsot pay for the price of a return ticket? (I won't have any need for the return sector.) Another thought, since many airlines charge through the roof for excess luggage even when booked in advance, is to book a ticket and use a freight company for luggage.

Any advice would be great. Cheers

Just a thought. I know you said you do not want to use miles/points but have you considered BMI Diamond Club while it is still around in it's present form?

You require 18,750 miles + GBP127.50 co-payment + ~GBP125 taxes and surcharges + ~GBP4.50 credit card surcharge for one-way cash miles in business class. To purchase 19,000 miles would cost GBP243 so the total cost would be ~GBP500 or ~AUD770.

You will more than likely end up on TG or CX so would need to research their baggage allowances and how much excess baggage costs.

Obviously another option would be to go with LCC to HKG and ship your excess baggage as unaccompanied baggage. There are a number of companies that have this service and Qantas is one of them.

Buy a return ticket and throw away the return section - or schedule it a year in advance and use it for another trip.

Also I just used these guys for air freighting stuff to HKG - Jetta Express. Payless for Excess Baggage you'll need to find a local mover to collect from the freight Super Terminal though or collect yourself (I did myself and it was quite an adventure!).

How much luggage will you have?
If you can fit everything into 40kg, and don't mind torturing yourself in the quest to save a few $$, you can fly Jetstar MEL-SIN-HKG. 40kg of checked luggage is $70, and at the current sale price, it adds up to only $450 or so for the cheapest flight. However, there will be an overnight transit of 12 hours plus. It's not a problem if you want to go out to the city and have a look (and try a chilli crab), but I would definitely find this itinerary a torture.

Unless there are other suggestions, I think I'll be going on a double Virgin (Australia + Atlantic) ticket as prices (fare + excess luggage) are reasonable.

That is a nice idea but for those that do not earn their QFF points quickly 140,000 QFF points is a Oneworld award.

Much, much better than 240 SCs....
