Nice report…..can you tell me more about the business seat you purchased on your BA leg,how much?What seat number was it?I am travelling as a couple if that helps from Syd-LHR.

I can't remember how much I paid, but it was expensive. I chose 7K which was one of the very few window seats with direct aisle access - so no hopping over legs for me.

Done some experimental random flights with finnair they take me to London BA me home or Helsinki to Japan home,yet to see full business all the way.

Finnair don’t fly their own metal into Australia but they codeshare with QF.
You should be able to fly Finnair HEL-SIN/BKK then connect into Australia with QF. I think the HEL-HKG route is currently suspended due to airspace restrictions from the Ukraine war.

Or have I misread your original question and you have a need to land in London? If so, Finnair don’t fly London-Australia or London-Asia.

Or possibly I pause my trip in Asia some where on the way home,BKK,SIN or Japan and use my velocity points (Singapore air)to come home from there and recommence my one world trip getting best of 35000 miles.

You just book the first part and it will charge as a classic award. You only need the points for that. Do not mention OWA as you will just confuse the agent. Then, when you have enough points, just call up and say you want to add flights to an existing booking. It should cap out at the cost of a OWA without that term ever being mentioned. Note that you will need to factor in extra points for the change fees.

Fact check please!
I made some changes yesterday and the booking had been sent off for ticketing.

After hanging up I noticed a better flight was available that I hadn't previously spotted. I rang back but was informed that I couldn't make the change until the original booking was ticketed.

Is that actually correct? I am sure I have done it before but perhaps I am mistaken. It was a while ago.

Yes - you are correct. In fact I am on the phone yet again right now. (I'm going to miss this twice- or 3 times daily activity when it's all settled) waiting on for the third person who told me that I had to pay extra points when I booked before the end of September..... So there is a litany of incorrectly educated service operators. Such a trap for young players...

Yes - adding flights, removing flights, changing dates, times, flight numbers - it will all accrue change fees.

Unfortunately that only applies for award flights booked before 30 September.

Fact Check, please...

There seemed to be a genuine error after updating some flights on my OWA booking on Friday which showed me owing $900 for 2 passengers. The operator said the amount showing was in Yen instead of AUD and support would have to fix it.

Anyway - it was sent off to support to fix and since then, 3 calls have yielded me with 3 people telling me I had to pay extra points and seemingly not understanding that this is an issue of taxes. (Sigh)

Anyway, this is my fact check. Knowing the risk of putting too many operators in the mix, I asked the original assistant if I could just pay the $900 and allow the system to issue me a credit.

She said that no - a credit only applied if the whole ticket had been cancelled which I wasn't about to do.

Is that actually correct? I actually believed her but I am now wondering. Surely if a tax was overpaid, they system would spot that?

I could have a OWA booking early June 2023 .

Initially I had a reasonable itinerary BNE-JNB-JNB ( stop)-CPT- LHR-ZRH (stop)-LHR-BNE via SIN. ( One downside is that there are only QF and BA so it wont max out at 318K but i was hoping to change once I could get from Zurich to home via HKG at least on one sector with Cathay)

Thru a combination of cancelled flights and rerouted ones , the itinerary is now looking unpleasantly complicated ( tight connections ) and prone to further flight changes.

So ,and I’m not going to drag this out , I have additionally booked, used UA Mileage Plus points, CPT-ADD-ZRH but not cancelled the full original itinerary so far. ( interestingly all taxes and charges for these Star Alliance flights came to 61 USD !)

QF cancelled my direct SIN-BNE and I am now routed via SYD.

I am about to try and calculate the best options from the point of view of spending points.

I should know the answers to the following questions, but I have never come across such difficulty in booking reward flights and never had to do these calculations.

So

1-Are the QFF points required for one set of flights that do not involve a stopover eg BNE-SYD-JNB calculated on the basis of the individual sectors ie BNE-SYD-JNB 467 + 6850 miles or calculated on the basis of BNE-JNB on the Great Circle Mapper – ie 7244 miles – it might seem a small point but I have some options that could need all my mileage up to the limit.

2. if flying on a single flight number on QF2 LHR-SIN-SYD , is the mileage calculated on

the direct mileage (GC) of 10573 or the individual sectors LHR-SIN plus SIN-SYD

I can't see any HKG-MEL or HKG-SYD classic rewards on QF metal after June (I'd like early July, but don't see any even out to August). Plenty in June. Have they not been released for some reason or simply all booked?

Separate flight numbers will calculate mileage or distance for each flight. A single flight number will be a single calculation of the direct A—>B path regardless of any transit points.

In your example 1 it will be 7244. In your example 2 it will be 10573.
