Oneworld Award - upgrade likelihood?

Hi all! I'm taking my first OW award in J later this month. I had to book one leg in Y and one in Y+ due to lack of availability. The Y flight is AY and the Y+ is CX. Is there any chance I'll be bumped up at check in, since essentially I've paid for J anyway? Has anyone had any success asking for an upgrade in this situation if there ends up being space in J?

Very low.. as a redemption you'd be generally treated as lower than a paid fare, they can't see that you couldn't get a J seat

keep checking to see if an award opens up and you can change to it.

Zero chance of an upgrade.

Ask Qantas for a discount/some form of consideration. Afterall, QF is paying Finnair for a Y segment instead of a J segment. QF is saving money while charging you full price!

On QF no chance.Had the same experience twice on QF.Once on a 747 we were seated in the first row of Y on the sector and could see and count on deplaning 5 J pax.Despite numerous requests before boarding and on boarding we were continually denied.
Though on AA we have been upgraded J-F when on an award.

Have you though? Wouldn't your points cost have been reduced based on your part J/Y fare (which I've seen happen in other cases)

Not on a Oneworld Award. You pay the rate of the highest class flown, even if that's only for one flight. 280,000/318,000.

Taxes would probably be cheaper on Economy and premium. So OP probably did save some cash. But yes, points cost the same.

It never hurts to ask, but your chances are slim unless you're Emerald.

From the airline's point of view, you're pretty much on the bottom of the list of people to upgrade. Doesn't make financial sense to upgrade you when they could upgrade someone else from Y to J and charge points.
