Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this but, as far as I have seen, there have been absolutely no economy one world award seats into Australia from Asia (SIN, HKG, NRT, Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila) or Doha for January 2017. I have been checking just about everyday and there has been nothing. This is important information to have on this thread for people planning trips. I assume all the airlines have assessed January flights to Australia to be too profitable to make frequent flyer seats available. I think it is up to Qantas to rectify this situation, particularly considering the big profits announced by the company today.

Anyway, I have had to get around the problem by booking one world award seats from Europe with Cathay Pacific (which has very low fees) to Bali and then paying for a cheap Jetstar flight to Cairns, followed by one world award seats to Brisbane. In the end I'm happy with this itinerary because I will spend a few days in Bali but it really is a ridiculous situation that a whole month is unavailable for Europe/Asia to Australia.

Just a correction on that last post: A Qantas rep just pointed out that there are seats with Japan Airlines. Four economy seats per flight on the daily Tokyo to Sydney flights. These are not visible on the Qantas site but I can see them when using the British Airways site. It's something to work with but the other airlines need to open up a few January seats as well.

Was wondering is there set QF fuel and charges on a J OW around world flights?.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Get's calculated out by the segment like any other flight, not sure what you mean by 'set'?

Set I mean fixed apparently not, would you have an example of extra dosh is required?.

It is totally dependent on the airlines you fly (and the fuel surcharges they charge) and the airports you travel through (and the government taxes, fees charged). But a good estimation is to budget in the region of $1000. My recent trip was $1200, that was maximising 5 stopovers, plus 34,000 odd miles. You can always do a check leg by leg on each flight and add it all up and it will be in the ballpark.

What are the Oneworld airlines with the lowest fees & surcharges? I know Cathay, Air Berlin & American have low surcharges. Any others you can recommend?

That's not correct. I've seen a number of scenarios where the single sectors added up cost less than the sectors booked together. In some cases, $300 less.

Yes. That is what I have just discovered with my booking. I have been charged about $100 more than the added price of each sector, as calculated from the Qantas web site. How is this possible? Should I complain that I have been overcharged?

What is your routing and what carriers for each leg?

Actually, IB surcharges are quite reasonable. But beware their terrible customer service!

Oh OK. When doing an old USDM booking once a jfk-mad on IB had the same YQ as jfk-lhr on BA

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

My routing is as follows:
BNE-HKG-AMS(Stop,Surface)-CDG-LHR-SIN(Stop)-DOH-VIE(Stop,surface)-FCO-HKG(Stop)-DPS(Stop, Surface)-DRW-BNE
Total Ticket Cost: $856.36
This was ticketed last week.

But this is what I the Qantas web site gives me:
BNE-HKG-AMS: $93.73
CDG-LHR-SIN: 183.09Euro = AU$280.82
SIN-DOH-VIE: S$235.50 = AU$234.66
FCO-HKG: 42.83Euro = AU$65.69
HKG-DPS: HK$170 = AU$30.68
DRW-BNE: AU$48.43

TOTAL: AU$754

If anyone can explain why I am calculating less for fees/surcharges than Qantas has charged me, please let me know.

I assume CDG-LHR-SIN is on BA? If so, that seems rather low for BA. Was this booking initially created online or over the phone?

Yes, CDG-LHR-SIN is on BA. I booked the LHR-SIN sector online but I added CDG over the phone after I realised it saved me lots of money (Air Passenger Duty) by not departing from the UK after a stopover.

I should point out that this booking was for 5 people so, if I have been overcharged for fees/surcharges, it is actually about $500 I could get back.

It would also be just nice to know how Qantas arrived at their total to help with planning future trips (eg. the fees for the Cathay flights appear to be so low, I will always try to fly with them to/from Europe - if they really are as low as the qantas site is suggesting)

Yes Cathay's fees are significantly lower than BA and a QF. From memory I paid $162 for J Syd-LHR and QF charge $550.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hello,

I am getting together an itinerary for a 280K RTW trip for 2. We went for 3 places we want to see and I have tried to build it around those choices. I will now hand it over to those who know what they are doing for advice. We are based in ISA so have included ISA-BNE to keep costs down.
The places selected were 1- Tokyo, Dubai & Edinburgh & Northern Lights , Havana & Iguazu Falls.
So based on this, this is what I came up with.
ISA-BNE-SYD-NRT -Stop
NRT-LAX-SCL -Stop
SCL-LIM Surface Iguazu Falls & 2 other spots in South America.
LIM-MIA-CUN -Stop (Arrange return flight to HAV)
CUN-MIA-CDG Stop (Have done this to avoid UK charges???)
CDG-OSL Surface (Northern Lights & Edinburgh)
OSL-DOH Stop (Quick flight to DXB and look around DOH too)
DOH-PER-BNE-ISA
Open to all suggestions about how to improve or change things
Thank you
Brendan

Since you're already flying to BNE, why not do ISA-BNE-NRT? If you prefer via SYD, it'll be ISA-BNE-SYD-HND.
Don't think there is a direct OW flight between CDG-OSL. Options include BA, AB, AY.
Also, I calculate your trip as being 4,500 odd miles over the 35,000 limit. Perhaps a separate ticket is needed for South American legs?
