OneWorld partners and baggage

I'm flying CBR-MEL-LAX on Qantas and then switching to AA LAX-PHL on a different ticket.

Does anyone know if its possible to check luggage through the the final destination? Assuming not, as we have to clear customs at LAX.

Some oneworld carriers will check through, Qantas isn't one of them (unless one ticket is a reward and the other a revenue ticket).

Check through across tickets used to be an alliance wide thing, but some airlines complained about it and now only a handful will.

Your luggage will be tagged to LAX with QF.
At LAX, retrieve your luggage and check it again with AA.

QF Silver (oneworld ruby) gets 1x23kg bag free on AA whilst QF Platinum and above (Oneworld Emerald) gets 3x 23kg bags for free.
