Booked on QR909 ex-Sydney, on an award booking using VA points. Attempted online check-in but after entering all the requested info, was only able to generate a "confirmation pass" and will have to go to airport check-in counter for boarding pass. Was trying to avoid this as we'll arrive at SYD on a regional flight (QF), well in advance of check-in opening. Was hoping to spend those extra hours in a lounge rather than waiting for check-in to open.

Does anyone have any tips/clues as to why I can't complete on-line check-in? Or is this a function of booking through VA?

I’ve had it before, it was a document check only, my end point was a US destination, not sure if it is all destinations that are impacted. I purchased the fare directly on the QR site.

Didn’t get it leaving the US however.

Nothing to do with VA. Depending on your destination and your citizenship situation QR may have to do a document check to make sure you have the right visa/permit for your destination.

Some airlines will still issue you a boarding pass when checking-in online, but will actually still conduct a full document check when you check-in your baggage or will have to page you at the gate/lounge if you happen to skip the check-in counter or pull you aside when you board to perform that check.

Thanks, Ben. Appreciate your reply and explanation. Don't need any visa/permit (I hope, or we won't be travelling anywhere) hence the question. 🤷‍♀️

If this is a oneway ticket to Doha then despite not having a visa requirement for Australian passports it is a requirement for them to check your onwards or return flight out of Doha.

Whilst they don't like to do it, Qantas might be able to do the document check for the Qatar flight and issue the boarding pass. I doesn't hurt to ask and it's policy that they do offer through check with checked luggage when one flight in a cash ticket and the other a redemption.
