wonders of wonders... Op'ed at checkin Darwin / Brisbane the other day. Funny enough, the bloke with me on the same booking who's QP-S didn't get Op'ed.

Needless to say I took one for the team and sat up front, enjoyed a nice lunch, a couple of cold crownies, a nice chardy and a comfy seat. Old mate enjoyed Y - at least he tried to convince me he did!

FWIW - we were both on fully flexi fares - not sure if they were Y, be both checked in at the same time and were both on the same booking... My assumptions about OPUP's has changed - I was under the assumption that both of us would have been Op'ed.

Been a week of flights (Mon MEL/SYD DJ, Tue SYD/BNE QF, Wed BNE/SYD/DRW, Fri DRW/BNE) so the OpUp was very much appreciated to say the least...

Thanks QF

Congratulations on the op-up. It is quite nice when you get to sit up the front for a change. :)

We can only ever make assumptions on what criteria QF, or any other airline, uses for standard op-ups but I guess as you are very high ranking Platinum you will still be offered an op-up if the opportuinty arises and you are travelling with someone else and only one op-up is available.

Had my first ever op-up yesterday.

SYD-SFO. A nice one to get it was too.. Was strange, I handed my BP in and it beeped. She switched it around, put it through again and it beeped again.

I heard her mumbling about "24k" to a colleague and was then handed a nice J BP.

Was incredulous as not only was I in 70D (!) originally, this was an O fare that I paid $440 for in the recent sale.

The food was very nice and the almost flat bed let me get a few hours sleep - managed to so far avoided jetlag which is pretty good for this leg.

I think A$440 must be the cheapest syd-sfo J class ever sold!

Just checked and I only got Y points & SC's for the trip but no complaints at all.

Doing some KUPPS and YUPPS while I am here so should re-qual SG about 6 months early.

Well I just got an op-up from Y to PE for a Melbourne to Los Angeles flight :D The real surprise is that I was on a RTW award ticket so a great start to a big multi leg trip.

Only INT upgrade was on a Melbourne to Auckland flight when on the plane I agreed to give up my bulk head seat for a family (a flight was cancelled and the mother had a young boy). Anyway after I agreed I was told to climb the stairs, the looks from the other passengers who said no to the move request I'll never forget

BTW the RTW 140k points for 5 stops, while in Y can't be beat, an now a PE seat to start

That was also the case for me last week, cheap O fare and op-up'ed :)

But for ages they have almost always got the correct miles/SC's awarded, have not seen or heard of errors in this regard recently or atleast not very often now.

Last month a collegue from the US joined me in China and we few to BKK together.. He was on a seperate ticket and actually downgraded his J ticket to WhY so we would sit together.. (what a guy!!) he's a director too,.

We got our boarding passes in FOC for the HKG-BKK leg and when we went to board the flight in HKG, I was op'd up to J on CX.. Sweet !!! im QF WP..

Needless to say he wasnt impressed 1 bit. oh well.. too bad sooo sad.. I havent ever been op'd up on any of the other (ex Qantas) OW airlines though.. only CX and only 1 time.. but certainly wont knock it back when you do get it.

From personal experience it's Ticket Class and Status which governs who gets OPUP's.

I always fly SYD-wherever-SYD and my return leg to SYD is always a flexi fare (K/B/H/Y) class, most of the time I get a K/B fare.

My OPUP's are 95% of the time on my K/B fare so therefore I assume that the WP + K/B ticket are the reason for the upgrades, not just the fact of WP.

I think you can safely bet that that will be the last time he ever downgrades a ticket....:!:

This has been discussed many times in the forum, and while no one really knows, I think the majority of experiences suggest that while status is relevant, ticket class/fare is not.

I have been op-uped several times, and with 1 or 2 exceptions, every time has been on a red e-deal. Also, I have been op-uped twice (with whole family - total 4 pax) when travelling on points.

Ok now I am starting to need more info...
Had you OLCI'ed before?
My habits mean the only one who really looks at my details is the bag drop person... Does anyone get OpUped at OLCI? If so how early had you checked in? Or do you go an ask about seat allocations at the QP/CI desk?
(I know chances slim to none being NB/QP but hopefully better when/if I make silver next month)

People seem to get Op-uped by OLCI or bag drop or check-in, it seems for domestic atleast often pre-determined. I am lazy i always check in and never OLCI anyway.

Checked my luggage - allocated 11C - Grrrrr

Went upstairs, asked the lovely Linda if there was anything further forward - got 2D with a huge smile and a "we've upgraded you tonight Mr!"

So is it better to go to the counter rather than OLCI? Does anyone ever get upgraded by doing OLCI? It's not relevant to me at the moment but I'll be SG in a few weeks.

I have been upgraded after an OLCI (it was the beep at the gate when I tried to baord that gave it away).

I am not so sure the decisions on these things relate to how you check in.

I doubt it's going to make a statistically significant difference either way.

At some point QF need the extra seats - could be they know they've oversold Y. Or it could be that at the last minute they need the extra seats [1]. Then yield management will kick in sort out who gets the upgrade. Being NB will probably not get your many op-ups.

[1] Happened to me in late December. Two pax missed their connecting flight up to BNE. Overhead QF customer service explaining that they'd been rebooked on the next flight. I get to the gate with my SO and our 4D/4E BPs rejected and then replaced with J class BPs in row 1. I see the misconnecting pax in our old seats in row 4 (as I was heading back to sit in Y with my brother-in-law to allow the girls to sit up front)

And yet most of my op-ups have been on the outbound leg and on the cheapest red e-deal possible. I guess we all have our own experiences and still none wiser as to the criteria used for the op-up....

Hi,

I like to weigh in on the old op-up debate with a recent experience from SYD-SIN.
I was traveling on a separate ticket to a work colleague but we were both on the same flight, he checked in at AKL, I had come from MEL and we met at SYD so i could get him into the F lounge as he is only a Silver member and I am a Platinum. Anyway he was allocated 40C at AKL for the SYD-SIN leg and I was allocated 40G for the same leg at MEL, great seats as the massive cut out for the bulk head so we did nto care if we were nto together as the plan was to ask to be re-seated together.

Anyway we spend a ncie 6 hours in the F lounge and when we processed to board the plane, my boarding pass did not register. The boarding lady proceeded to look for my new boarding pass and sure enough I was op'ed to PE in 35J. Next thing my colleague had exactly the same issue and behold he too was op'ed to PE in 35K.

Why we were both op'ed who knows but maybe had to do with when we checked in at the F lounge and we were linked in there maybe, who knows. We assumed my status and the fact he was with me, even though on separate bookings allowed him the chance to get an op up as well, but either way we were both not complaining.

On a side note I have had at least two op'ups that I can remember where the person also on my booking got the op up as well when they were Bronze status so must have something to do with status for sure of the higher tiered individual and QF not wanting to split them up. I just hoep that if they only require 1 op up that it is me, even if I am traveling with someone, hehe.

Another OpUp...

SIN F check in yesterday for QF6 (SYD) Opp'd from Y to Y+ as well as my employee (not even a FF member).

this is great even if it was only Y+ instead of J ;)
