Just checked seatcounter and my flight to NY on August 5 seems relatively empty especially in Business class (green 9s all the way)

We are a week out and there's been no email about upgrades (Im on an O class fare but am platinum) and I've got a PE seat (but still designated Economy).

Question is - Are Qantas upgrading anyone even on these (almost) empty flights?

Any insights would be appreciated.

I don't like your chances.

I think you'd have to be pretty lucky for Qantas to send out a similar email again (in the next week) allowing upgrades from N, O and Q.

Operational (free) upgrades are usually done when a cabin is oversold. So to answer your question, if it's an empty flight, you've got almost zero chance.

Thanks for your insight - I had a feeling that would be the case - I got lucky with a PE seat and Y service. Will see what happens......

Missed you by that much-i will be on the LAX-NYC sector on August 6.

I'm a Platinum member too and recently booked an O class return to SIN from MEL. A week out, I received a call saying I could confirm an upgrade immediately using points. I didn't take up the offer but ended up gaining a free upgrade on the outbound sector to Premium. On the way back, I was upgraded to Business without using my points, as the flight was full in Economy and Premium.

QF107 LAX/JFK on 5 August is full in Y.

Really! I must be doing something wrong - The seat map on the QF website has a ton of vacant seats and seatcounter is still showing seats - Dont get me wrong - its good news!

I lodged a request for an upgrade from PE to J for my son who is a bronze and 45000 points got him into business on QF108 a week ago.
The decision seemed to come thru between 17 and 5 hours prior to the flight departure.Qantas wont upgrade to FIRST from PE on points.
All I would say is it is a long way to go if you dont get that upgrade so if you have plenty of points........a longhaul like that is where to use them.

I completely agree- problem is that I have an O class fare - no upgrades with points. Instead I will pray to "our lady of upgrade" and hope that she delivers and can see my divine platinum membership and a full Y cabin!

even though most dont seem so positive... i have traveled this sector 5 times this year... and ive been upgraded on 4 of them... 3 times to buisness and once to premium.
I'm not even a platinum flyer!

I guess your chances are simply that... chances!

Goodluck :)

QF107/108 is an Interesting route at the moment. I hope you get your op-up to business Nutcase.

I am on the same flight SYD-LAX a few weeks later, pre-allocated premium economy seats, on a WHY Oneworld award and have been monitoring the situation. The flight is not quite full but is getting there.

V class was showing 7 yesterday so it looks like it will be a full flight. An op-up would be nice but there are 2 of us so not going to be as easy.

Don't rely too much on EF or Seatcounter stats for determining op-up chances. QF127 SYD-HKG was showing X3 yesterday and 9's in all other economy classes. This morning I have been op-uped from Y to W.

I have just flown the BNE-LAX-NY return with the LAX-NY and NY-LAX on the QF107/108 services. On the way to NY from LA (17 July) we were pre-allocated PE seats with Y service - flight was not full and I don't think there were any UPGs. However, on the return (28 July), we were OPUPD to PE from an O class fare into J seats. I note that although OPUPs are occurring more frequently at the moment, your status does seem to influence where in the new cabin you sit. For example, on this flight, there were normal PE seats and J seats being used for PE. We got the Skybeds - I can't help but think that my Gold status had something to do with that. I also think that the status may have made the decision to OPUP 2 pax as opposed to one non-status pax an easier one for QF too. Interestingly, we also go on OPUP from a points UPG PE ticket to J on the LAXBNE flight.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks - Thats wise counsel. Ive checked again both the QF website and the ever shifting seatcounter and overnight the flight is full. Whats that all about?
Also checked yesterday to buy a ticket - out of curiosity and it came in at $1100 return! Today $2500. Its all over the shop. The only consistency is that Business is empty and there are only a handful of people rattling around in First.

Anyway- Im doing well with the seat that I have and hoping for a surprise at check in, or the first lounge, or at the gate, or on board or maybe just a handful of sleeping pills and glass of wine.....

It that Qantas see ANY seat as sellable - if WHY is oversold but F and/or J and/or W are not then Qantas will endeavour to increase revenue for a flight by selling those premium seats for WHY fares - including awards. Qantas may do this until every seat is sold for whatever revenue they can glean.

I have seen this for most of this year.

Jenny & I were op-upped on an award (X) fare to Y+ MEL to SIN but the day before the flight it was showing something like R0 F9 A9 J9 C9 D9 I7 W9 T9 B9 K9 M5 L5 V5 S5 N5 Q5 O5 X5

And revenue $$ are not the only consideration... there are various reports released to the ASX that look much better when bums are on seats... even if they are awards!!! ;)

Think I am going to regret my decision switching from WHY exit row to premium economy seats for QF107 SYD-LAX in ~3 weeks. Economy looks full and I feel WHY exit row would have been a better bargaining tool. Ah well.
