I am planning BNE to LON (any) on 27 Nov to 7 Dec. I have two options, (1) Emirates via Dubai economy (EK431/EK15) ($4625 booking with Emirates or $13k+ if booked with Qantas) or (2) Qatar via Doha (QR899/QR327) economy for $3155 booking on Qatar website. I am WP with Qantas.

Ideally I would like to travel in Business, so I am contemplating upgrades using points.

My questions are:
1. Can I upgrade either the Emirates or Qatar flights with my Qantas Points, and will my WP/Emerald Status help my possibility of success?
2. Will I earn Qantas status on these flights, or should I try to book something directly with Qantas instead?

1. No.
2. No (if we are talking about classic flight rewards).

Those seem pretty steep prices for economy travel. I expect cheaper options can be found on other airlines.

QFF points can only be used to upgrade Qantas flight number on Qantas aircraft. There are a very small number of exceptions to this, but in the case of the flight your are considering, that statement holds.

And note that points upgrades using QFF points are not guaranteed, so you should always assume you will be traveling in the cabin class for which you purchased the ticket.

If wanting OneWorld options at reasonable cost, look for some of the FinnAir fares via HKG or SIN and HEL as they are often well priced and you will get some OneWorld benefits with your status. They normally combine with QF operated flight to HKG/SIN.

Pricing for Y is reflecting peak season travel and capacity vs demand (both post-COVID factors as well as “peak” travel), as well as you’re booking less than a month from travel.

You can only upgrade using QF points on QF metal (cant even do on QF codeshare on EK metal), and even if on QF, likelihood at this stage of getting a points upgrade is very low.

I’d look for cheapest option in Y and be prepared to travel in Y.

2. If paying cash will earn QF ff points as per the QF web site.
EK flight number - no SC's
QF & QR flight number will get SC's

Unless you want to spend big cash $$$$ expect you will be flying Y. Or maybe PE if you spend cash $$.
Look at other options, including non OW airlines. QF is probably the worst option for cost to ff benefit gained.
Looked at CX or MH ex BNE (if operating)?
What is available ex SYD?
What is available on a different dates?
Upgrade is a hope at best on a QF flight, even as QF Plat.
