I had a trip last year to the south of France for a week - got an Orange France prepaid sim with data for around twenty euro which lasted me the whole week.
Activated and running within a few minutes in store [a tobacconist, no Hungarian phrasebook required]

Tip: buy your sim in a re-seller shop, not the Orange stores. Cheaper for some reason. eg a convenience store [or a tobacconist, just don't mention your hovercraft]
