Overnight Transit in NRT - where to stay?

Anyone have experience with an overnight transit in Narita come late April?

We arrive in from HNL-NRT at approx 4:30pm, and fly out NRT-MEL at 10:30am next day. The flights are ticketed as one, so will only have carry on luggage with us.

Is there any good option to stay nearby? We may venture into Tokyo, but we may not so I'm thinking we might as well stay somewhere close by the airport. Reason we may not venture in is we will see how we're feeling - this is the flights home after 3 week honeymoon, with first week in Tokyo, then 2 weeks in Japan.

There's no shortage of reasonably priced hotels between the airport and Narita station, many of them with a retro 1980s feel. Shuttle buses from the airport, or there's a separate queue for short taxi journeys which I'd use if the bus timing doesn't quite work.

If you're an IHG member the ANA-Crowne Plaza is quite nice. Free shuttle and wasn't expensive last May.

As noted by junbugging there are lots of nearby hotels with shuttle bus services.

Since you've spent time in Tokyo I'd strongly recommend staying near NRT not only to avoid the 90 min ride, mostly because Narita township is very nice place to spend half a day. Regarding hotels in the area I can't recommend any as we only stayed at Hilton which is a very dated, think 80s décor in the worst possible way...

They have a free airport shuttle and a free shuttle in to Narita City. A quick visit in to town for some Katsu-don and a few beers then back to the hotel where there's a small Sports Bar downstairs which is not a bad place to meet some expats and air crew. Up for a morning gym/swim followed by a decent breakfast and then the shuttle back to NRT. Too easy.
United and few other carriers put their crews up here.

We stayed at the Mercure in Narita, got the train from the terminal, Keisei mainline, took about 10 minutes, hotel is around the corner and across the road from the station, a couple of minutes max. Then hotel shuttle back the next morning, the flight crew were at the same hotel.

The Mercure is a bit tired, but breakfast was good and as it is Japan, there are plently of eating options nearby.

We were going to stay at the Narita Airport Rest House, but I wanted Accor rewards.

We have stayed at the Hilton many times and the Crowne Plaza.Both are adequate.If yo have any time go into Narita Town and walk downhill to the temple.Lots of little shops and local restaurants.Or go to the Aeon mall for more commercial Japanese offerings.There is a bus that does a loop of many hotels to the town and Aeon Mall.Hilton has a shuttle to town and the Aeon mall.Not as frequent or convenient as it used to be.

Narita airport Hilton is a solid option. Has a lovely swimming pool and a real nice bustling (in a good way) breakfast area. Free airport shuttle - takes 5-10 mins.

Just remember, people who are tattooed will be refused entry into a Japanese hotel pool.

Just stay near the airport, a short overnight connection like that isn't worth heading into Tokyo.

There are more and more exceptions to that "rule" of late.

Yeah, I like the skyliner - it's quick, and even with the change it's not too bad to get to places like Shinjuku (20 mins quicker than NEX and cheaper).

The only thing I'd add for the OP is that if you do decide to go into Tokyo for some sightseeing, check the return train times to NRT. The NEX finishes quite early - last train from Shinjuku is 1939 and the last train from Tokyo is 2003: JR-EAST Train Reservation

The last skyliner (eveningliner) appear to be 2306 getting in a 0009: KEISEI Electric Railway

Has anyone recently been to multiple of the three major international chain hotels at Narita: Hilton, Radisson, Crowne Plaza?

If so, can you recommend for or against any of them for a single night on arrival before heading into the city?

I have a flexible reservation with a promo deal on a Business Class room at the Radisson (the lowest room category that would guarantee a king bed). The other two seem to be a bit closer to the airport. A king room at the Crowne Plaza would probably be a bit cheaper, but an AusBT review from a few years back was not kind to it. The basic queen room at the Hilton would probably cost a bit more, but Lucky from OMAAT recently reviewed it and seemed generally positive (and said the "queen" bed was probably a king).

I have Hilton Honors Gold from Amex Platinum, and am waiting for the Radisson Rewards status uplift to be confirmed.

Have not stayed at the other two but I can recommend the Hilton. Was there few days ago and everything was fine. Don’t expect luxury, it’s an older hotel but well maintained with decent facilities and convenient shuttle to airport and town.

Don't bother with the Crowne Plaza.
I second boomy's recommendation of the Hilton. Breakfast is good, the hotel has a convenience store in the lobby if you want a cheap, easy dinner and there is a free shuttle to Narita Station and Aeon Mall for lots of dinner and shopping options.

Used to always frequent the Hilton-I think about 40 stays.but on our last trip tried the CP as it was worth a lot of bonus points.Sure different to when we stayed about 15 years ago.Has had renos and we felt now better than the Hilton.particularly dining in which was not horrendously expensive.Two posts cover the CP.
